Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company founded to radically accelerate air travel by delivering hypersonic aircraft. The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter.
The Build Reliability organization at Hermeus is a new interdisciplinary team that is committed to the reliability of flight components and manufactured assemblies. Build Reliability Engineers at Hermeus will guide the hardware from design to manufacturing and flight operation. They will use data to understand the factors that drive reliability and support quality initiatives with design and development teams to drive improvements in manufacturing, test, and flight reliability. Additionally, they will deep dive into the details to identify, understand, and solve difficult technical problems and utilize a system-level approach to prioritize issues for the Quarterhorse vehicle.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Partner with design engineering and manufacturing teams through vehicle development to create quality plans for hardware, including identification of key characteristics, prototype testing for functionality, and manufacturability, defining first article inspection requirements, and consideration of past failures and lessons learned
- You will be responsible for inspection of components to internal and industry standards to determine part conformity
- Investigate failures in manufacturing, test, and flight, identifying and mitigating the immediate and underlying root causes in order to reduce risk and improve the reliability of designs and processes
- Determine the appropriate Quality Management System requirements around traceability, non-conformance, and configuration management for the program and work with IT/QMS software teams to build and test the applications to enforce said requirements
- You will support the Quality Management System policies and procedure documentation and participates in continual improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives
- Own and manage the “containment” process. You will contain suspect or known non-conforming product, providing guidance to quality inspectors, technicians, shop supervisors, and engineers to assist in quarantining and rework activities
- Develop, implement, and validate Lean test and inspection processes for new and existing products and processes, ensuring that criteria are objective and that quality goals are consistently met
- Confirm operational safety precautions are considered and identified per area planning standards
- You willassist in drivingthe closure on NC disposition and MRB (material review board) resolution
- You will assist in the development of Supplier Quality at Hermeus – engaging in supplier quality reviews, assisting with NC closures with suppliers, and overall suppler quality assurance, etc.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or engineering physics
- 3+ years in a manufacturing, quality, and/or design engineering role
- Experience working in development environment
- Experience supporting the production of complex mechanical/structural assemblies
- Knowledge of quality tools such as Lean principles, Six Sigma, root cause analysis and corrective action, advanced product quality planning (APQP), metrology, process failure mode and effects analysis (PFMEA), control plans, and various problem-solving approaches
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills, enthusiasm for the team’s spirit of innovation and mission of improving reliability in cutting-edge technology
- Demonstrated application of process controls in high-volume manufacturing, test, and quality environment
- Hands-on knowledge of CNC machining, additive manufacturing, casting, welding, fastening, or other special manufacturing processes

What We Do
Hermeus is a startup developing hypersonic aircraft to radically accelerate air travel.
At Mach 5, more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde, passengers will be able to cross the Atlantic in 90 minutes.
On the path to hypersonic passenger aircraft, Hermeus is partnering with government agencies including the US Air Force and NASA to develop a series of autonomous aircraft that derisk the technology and solve urgent national security challenges. These products provide the data and confidence necessary to certify, produce, operate, and maintain safe and comfortable commercial aircraft.
Hypersonic aircraft have the potential to create trillions of dollars of new global economic growth per year, unlocking significant resources that can be utilized to solve the world’s greatest problems.
Why Work With Us
We prioritize hardware and people. Cutting-edge technology is only made possible by bringing together a world-class team. At Hermeus, you will be challenged – but also empowered. We encourage calculated risks taking and learning from our mistakes. Iteration is the name of the game.
