About the opportunity
At QIAGEN Digital Insights (QDI), we develop industry-leading bioinformatics software and curated knowledge bases that help researchers, laboratories, and clinicians transform molecular data into actionable insights.
As a Senior Engineer, you will take ownership of building and evolving server-side systems and data-intensive services, primarily using Scala. You will work on distributed systems, APIs, and processing pipelines that support complex clinical and research workflows. This is not a typical CRUD back-end role – the focus is on scalability, correctness, performance, and reliability in a regulated domain. Exposure to Scala, functional programming, or Python is a plus, since parts of our backend ecosystem use these technologies. You will also play a key role in technical decisions, mentoring, and raising back-end engineering standards within the team.
Your tasks
Design, develop, and enhance scalable backend services and distributed systems using Scala and related technologies
Build and evolve APIs, processing pipelines, and platform services that support genomic and biomedical data workflows
Drive technical architecture decisions with a focus on scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability
Collaborate closely with Product Management, Frontend Engineering, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions
Implement automated testing practices and maintain high engineering standards through code reviews and engineering best practices
Mentor engineers and contribute to the continuous growth of engineering capabilities within the team
Support technical discovery activities, solution design discussions, effort estimations, and feasibility assessments
Your profile
5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong expertise developing production-grade applications using Java (Java 8/11/17+)
Solid understanding of object-oriented design principles, software architecture patterns, and engineering best practices
Experience designing, building, and operating distributed backend systems with a focus on scalability, reliability, and performance
Strong experience designing, developing, and consuming REST APIs; exposure to GraphQL is an advantage
Experience with concurrency, asynchronous programming, data processing, and backend testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, or similar
Hands-on experience working with relational and non-relational databases (SQL and NoSQL)
Proficiency with Git-based development workflows, code reviews, and collaborative software engineering practices
Nice to have:
Experience with functional programming, ideally using Scala, including familiarity with Scala ecosystem tools such as Akka, ZIO, Cats, or similar technologies
Working knowledge of Python for scripting, automation, or data processing, alongside experience with event-driven and streaming architectures
Exposure to healthcare, biotech, or other regulated software environments, with familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP), containerised deployments, and CI/CD practices

QIAGEN Insights
What We Do
QIAGEN is the leading global provider of Sample to Insight solutions that enable customers to gain valuable molecular insights from samples containing the building blocks of life. Our sample technologies isolate and process DNA, RNA and proteins from blood, tissue and other materials. Assay technologies make these biomolecules visible and ready for analysis. Bioinformatics software and knowledge bases interpret data to report relevant, actionable insights. Automation solutions tie these together in seamless and cost-effective workflows. QIAGEN provides solutions to more than 500,000 customers around the world in Molecular Diagnostics (human healthcare) and Life Sciences (academia, pharma R&D and industrial applications, primarily forensics).
