Company is looking for an engineer who can design, build, and maintain a metrics/monitoring pipeline using Java services, Telegraf, and InfluxDB. The role involves instrumenting Java applications, configuring data collection, and ensuring reliable, high-quality time-series data for observability, reporting, and alerting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement and maintain Java services (e.g. Spring Boot) that expose application and system metrics.
- Configure and manage Telegraf to collect metrics from servers, containers, JMX, and HTTP endpoints.
- Design, optimize, and operate InfluxDB schemas, retention policies, and queries for time-series data.
- Work with the team to build dashboards and alerts (e.g. Grafana/Chronograf) based on InfluxDB data.
- Monitor performance, troubleshoot data pipeline issues, and improve reliability and scalability.
- Collaborate with developers, DevOps, and product teams to define what needs to be measured and tracked.
Requirements:
- Strong experience with Java (preferably Spring Boot or similar frameworks).
- Hands-on experience with time-series or metrics systems – ideally InfluxDB; strong PostgreSQL/MySQL + time-based analytics experience is acceptable with willingness to learn InfluxDB.
- Experience configuring Telegraf or similar metric/agent tools (e.g. Prometheus exporters, StatsD, etc.).
- Solid understanding of monitoring, logging, and observability concepts (metrics, tags/labels, dashboards, alerts).
- Comfortable working with Linux-based environments, containers (Docker), and common CI/CD workflows.
- Good communication skills and ability to work with stakeholders to define metrics and SLAs.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Grafana, Prometheus, or TimescaleDB.
- Exposure to microservices and distributed systems.
- Experience in performance tuning and capacity planning.
