About The Gig:
- Heartbeat Health is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our lean, high-impact engineering team and help build our virtual-first cardiovascular care platform. You’ll develop backend services that orchestrate care journeys and drive outcomes for patients and providers across the country. This is a hands-on role where you’ll work alongside experienced engineers to solve challenging technical problems and shape system architecture.
- We’re looking for a senior engineer who thrives in high-autonomy environments - someone who brings architectural thinking, executional rigor, and a strong product mindset. You’ll play a key role in scaling a platform that’s transforming specialty care through clean abstractions, pragmatic engineering, and tight iteration.
What You'll Do:
- Build Systems That Matter - Design, implement, and maintain RESTful backend services and APIs that power care coordination, EMR interoperability, and automation across our platform.
- Deliver Incremental Value - Partner closely with product, clinical, and operations to ship usable, valuable backend functionality in short, feedback-driven iterations.
- Write Reliable Code - Contribute clean, well-tested, and maintainable code that’s built for resilience, observability, and scale.
- Shape Technical Direction - Participate in design reviews and technical discussions that influence how our systems evolve over time.
- Contribute to a High-Impact Team - Join a group that values thoughtful engineering, clear ownership, and shipping real value - fast.
What You'll Need:
- 5+ years of experience building backend services and APIs
- Strong proficiency in at least one modern, statically typed language like Rust, Go, or Kotlin (we’re a Rust shop)
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs, including defining and maintaining documentation with OpenAPI specifications.
- Solid understanding and experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), distributed systems, and AWS cloud environments.
- Familiarity with service-oriented architectures and best practices for designing modular services.
- Comfort with CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and monitoring/observability tools.
- Solid communication and collaboration skills; ability to work cross-functionally and independently
- A bias toward pragmatism, simplicity, and execution
Nice-to-Haves:
- Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries
- Familiarity with EHR integrations (FHIR, HL7, SMART on FHIR, etc.)
- Experience building with Rust and its ecosystem (e.g., Actix, Serde, Diesel, Tokio)
- Interest or experience in AI/ML systems or integrating AI-powered tools
About our Culture:
- We are mission-driven: we're revolutionizing the way cardiovascular care is delivered
- We are fast-paced & agile: we move quickly, iterate often, and value experimentation
- We are remote-first: flexibility, autonomy, and trust are at the core of how we operate

What We Do
Heartbeat Health is a venture-backed health tech startup in New York. We are working to deliver the most effective, efficient, and engaging virtual heart care in the world. By 2030, over 40% of the US population will have heart disease, with direct and indirect costs approaching $1 trillion USD. Heart disease may be the most important health crisis we confront in our time.
Heartbeat addresses this problem via virtual cardiology services that include diagnostic interpretation, telecardiology, and procedural referrals to bring virtual-first care to cardiology, and improve the outcomes and efficiency for cardiac patients.
Our team consists of passionate and proven physicians, engineers, scientists, designers, and founders attacking this problem from first principles, applying human-centered design, and developing evidence-based AI to solve this global issue. We collaborate with the American College of Cardiology, and we have been recognized as one of the 150 most promising digital health startups by CB Insights. We recently closed our Series B funding and are backed by Echo Health Ventures, Optum Ventures, DaVita Venture Group, .406 Ventures, Kindred Ventures, Lerer Hippeau, Designer Fund, and Max Ventures. We’ve been featured in TechCrunch, CNBC, Fast Company, and Forbes.
