Pfizer's BioMedicine Design (BMD) Group in Cambridge, MA is responsible for discovering and developing biotherapeutic drug candidates. The group is responsible for identification and engineering of Biotherapeutic proteins, protein production, and protein analytics.
BMD is seeking a Lab Operations Senior Associate to support the BMD Strategy and Operations Team in maintaining state of the art laboratories in Kendall Square.
The BMD Lab Operations Senior Associatewill work directly with Laboratory Scientists, Lab Instrument Services, Global Operations and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Leads to leverage their significant laboratory experience, superior organizational skills, and positive outgoing personal presence to ensure a safe, functional, well-organized, and vibrant workspace.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Acts as the primary operational interface between BMD scientists, the Portfolio and Operations Lead, Facilities, Global Operations, Lab Instrument Services, and vendors to independently resolve day‑to‑day laboratory needs, including equipment repairs, service coordination, compliance guidance, and coordination of domestic and international sample shipments.
- Provides operational support for the Media & Solutions laboratory within BMD, supporting BMD and other Pfizer Cambridge scientific groups.
- Proactively manages inventory levels for media, buffers, reagents, and consumables to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations
- Provides occasional support for preparation of media, buffers, and reagents when required.
- Manages cold‑storage and freezer operations, including organization, alarm monitoring & response coordination, and recovery activities to prevent sample loss and minimize operational risk.
- Leads recurring laboratory operational programs such as annual lab cleanouts, chemical inventory reviews, freezer consolidation efforts, and pipette calibration campaigns
- Supports laboratory onboarding and offboarding activities for new laboratory staff
- Assists the BMD Portfolio and Operations team with equipment asset management and capitalization activities
- Oversees laboratory waste management, working with third‑party waste management vendors to ensure biohazardous and chemical waste is handled, labeled, and disposed of in compliance with site standards and regulatory requirements.
- Conducts quarterly internal EHS laboratory safety inspections with site EHS team and works directly with laboratory teams to document, track, and close out findings using established site tools and processes.
- Partners with scientists, EHS, and site teams to support laboratory sustainability initiatives, including waste reduction, freezer optimization, responsible consumable use, and participation in site or enterprise sustainability programs aligned with Pfizer's environmental goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant scientific field including biology, cell biology, biomedical engineering, pharmacology
- 2+ years' experience working in a laboratory environment; preferably in the biopharmaceutical industry
- Strong knowledge of commonly used laboratory consumables, supplies, and standard laboratory equipment, including associated computer hardware and software.
- Sufficient laboratory training and experience to prepare buffers and solutions as needed, following established procedures.
- Experience coordinating laboratory operational needs with Digital/IT teams, including asset tracking, lab computer access, and support for authentication tools and system updates.
- Strong passion for laboratory operations, with a proactive, continuous‑improvement mindset; thrives in fast‑paced environments and demonstrates strong organization, approachability, and problem‑solving skills.
- Able to organize own work to meet project task deadlines; possesses basic team effectiveness skills & peer-influencing skills required to work in a matrix environment. Able to work effectively as both a team member and as an independent contributor.
- Proficiency in the use of MS Office particularly Excel and PowerPoint
- Knowledgeable on laboratory sustainability initiatives
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Lifting 30 pounds, sitting, standing, walking, bending.
- Able to perform algebraic mathematical calculations and determine molarity and percentages. Autonomously calculates volumes of required solution components based on mathematical calculations.
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- This role will involve use and handling of some hazardous materials and will require use of personal protective equipment.
- May require occasional onsite evening or weekend work.
