Company Mission

Making family care possible. At Abby Care, we are tackling one of the most important and unsolved challenges of our time: family caregiving.

Over 50 million Americans are family caregivers for loved ones without pay, tools, or support. Our mission is to train and employ family caregivers so they can get paid for the care they already provide at home.

Abby Care is building a tech-powered, family-first care platform to efficiently deliver care, improve health outcomes, and provide a best-in-class experience nationwide. We are backed by top mission-driven investors and are building a high-caliber team across technology, operations, and healthcare.

The Role

At Abby Care, we are building AI-powered technology designed to transform care delivery and seamlessly scale complex healthcare operations. We are focused on creating measurable impact for caregivers, families, and internal teams through robust, intelligent systems.

We’re looking for a Senior Applied AI Engineer to build production-grade AI systems that automate and augment critical workflows across the organization. This is a hands-on, zero-to-one engineering role focused on translating ambiguous operational problems into reliable, secure, and highly scalable AI solutions. You will report to the Head of Engineering and work closely with Engineering, Product, Design, Data, and Operations.

You will own the end-to-end lifecycle of our customer-facing AI products. To ensure these solutions are practical and impactful, you will collaborate closely with Product, Design, Data, and Operations, effectively bridging the gap between complex technical tradeoffs and real-world care delivery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and ship production AI systems end to end, from problem definition to deployment and iteration.

  • Develop AI agents and workflow automation systems that can reason over context, use tools, and integrate with internal platforms.

  • Design evaluation frameworks, datasets, metrics, and feedback loops to measure and improve AI system quality.

  • Apply LLMs, multimodal models, RAG, structured extraction, and tool use to real-world healthcare workflows.

  • Partner with Engineering, Product, Data, and Operations to integrate AI capabilities into Abby Care’s products and internal systems.

  • Improve reliability, observability, guardrails, and human-in-the-loop review mechanisms for production AI systems.

  • Stay close to frontier AI capabilities and apply them pragmatically to create business and operational leverage.

Requirements
  • 5+ years of software engineering, applied AI, machine learning, or related technical experience.

  • Strong experience building and shipping production software systems.

  • Hands-on experience with modern AI systems, including LLMs, RAG, agents, structured extraction, classification, or workflow automation.

  • Strong programming skills and ability to work across backend systems, APIs, data pipelines, and AI orchestration layers.

  • Practical experience with prompt engineering, tool use, retrieval, model selection, context management, and failure analysis.

  • Experience designing evaluation methodologies for AI systems, including quality metrics, test sets, human review loops, and error analysis.

  • Strong system design judgment around reliability, scalability, observability, and maintainability.

  • High ownership, strong execution, and comfort operating in a fast-paced startup environment.

Preferred
  • Experience building agentic systems, AI copilots, or workflow automation in production.

  • Experience with multimodal AI, OCR, document understanding, or structured data extraction.

  • Experience in healthcare, insurance, caregiving, or other regulated and operations-heavy domains.

  • Experience with human-in-the-loop systems, auditability, and quality assurance workflows.

  • Experience with knowledge graphs, ontologies, entity resolution, or structured knowledge representation.

  • Prior startup or zero-to-one product development experience.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation packages that reflect the value you bring. We reward our team for the impact of their work – full-time employees are eligible for an annual company performance bonus.

  • Comprehensive health coverage that works for you. Choose from high-quality medical dental and vision options, including a $0 deductible PPO and a company-funded HSA, alongside employer-paid life and disability insurance.

  • Generous paid time off. We provide policies that allow you to recharge along with 10 paid company holidays.

  • Financial savings benefits to support your future. We support your financial well-being with HSA contributions, optional FSA and commuter benefits, and full coverage of all 401(k) account fees (employer match not currently offered).

  • Paid parental leave to support your growing family. We provide paid leave, so you can focus on bonding and adjusting to life as your family grows.

Our Values
  1. Families First
Redefining healthcare starts with how we treat the parents and children we serve. We go above and beyond for every family, building strong, lasting relationships. We continually ask ourselves, “Would we want this for our own families?”

  2. Urgency with Precision
Millions of families are waiting for care, and they cannot wait, therefore this is not your typical 9 to 5 job. We match their urgency with our own, delivering exceptional care without compromise. Here, speed and excellence go hand in hand.

  3. Relentlessly Resourceful
As an ambitious startup, we adapt quickly and make the most of limited time and resources. We solve challenges with creativity to deliver results without unnecessary complexity.

  4. Purpose with Positivity
We take our mission seriously while never losing sight of the people behind the work. Respect, kindness, memes, and coffee make us stronger as a team and better for the families we serve.

  5. Driven to Redefine What’s Possible
We are here to make healthcare better, which means asking hard questions, challenging outdated systems, and finding smarter, more compassionate ways to deliver care.

Skills Required

  • 5+ years of non-internship experience in software engineering and applied AI/ML engineering
  • High proficiency in Python
  • Extensive experience operating within modern cloud platforms (e.g., AWS)
  • Deep, hands-on experience deploying, monitoring, and scaling LLM applications
  • Strong expertise in RAG architectures and agentic workflows
  • Experience in model fine-tuning and automated performance measurement
  • Experience in data processing and orchestration workflows
  • Experience in human-in-the-loop AI pipelines
