Responsibilities

The Senior Android Engineer will design, build, and evolve high-quality Android experiences using Kotlin and modern Android frameworks. This person will own consequential technical decisions, partner closely with product, design, backend, quality, and iOS peers, and help the team ship reliable customer value. The ideal candidate has deep Android expertise and enough hands-on iOS experience to reason about platform tradeoffs, review shared mobile patterns, and occasionally contribute targeted Swift or SwiftUI changes when useful.

Core responsibilities

  • Own the design and implementation of complex Android features from discovery through monitoring after release.
  • Set and evolve technical direction for Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, app architecture, modularization, networking, persistence, and dependency management.
  • Write clear technical designs; surface tradeoffs, risks, dependencies, and migration plans before implementation.
  • Build accessible, responsive interfaces in close partnership with product design and research.
  • Improve automated testing across unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end layers; make quality an everyday engineering practice.
  • Strengthen observability, performance, crash health, security, privacy, and release confidence for the Android app.
  • Partner with backend and platform teams on API contracts, offline behavior, authentication, experimentation, and analytics.
  • Collaborate with iOS engineers on shared product behavior and mobile standards while respecting platform-native conventions.
  • Review code thoughtfully, mentor engineers, and raise the quality of technical decisions without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
  • Participate in planning, estimation, incident response, and continuous improvement of the mobile delivery process.
  • This position will be in one of the following locations: Falls Church, VA, Aurora, CO, San Antonio, TX, or Tacoma, WA.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8 years with BS/BA; 12 years of experience with a high school diploma.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial ownership of production Android applications; equivalent depth of experience is welcome.
  • Advanced Kotlin skills and strong knowledge of Android SDK fundamentals, Jetpack libraries, coroutines, and reactive state management.
  • Production experience with Jetpack Compose, including state, navigation, performance, testing, and interoperability with Views.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound architecture decisions and evolve a mature codebase safely over time.
  • Experience with REST or GraphQL APIs, local persistence, background work, authentication, analytics, and push notifications.
  • Strong testing and debugging habits, including use of crash, performance, and product telemetry to guide decisions.
  • Experience shipping through Google Play, managing staged rollouts, and responding to production issues.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and non-engineering partners.
  • A record of mentoring others and improving team practices through influence and example.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.

iOS experience expected

This remains an Android-first role. Candidates do not need to be senior iOS specialists, but they should have enough practical experience to collaborate across both mobile platforms. Strong evidence includes:

  • Hands-on experience reading and making scoped changes in Swift, SwiftUI, and/or UIKit.
  • Familiarity with Xcode, iOS app lifecycle, navigation, concurrency, testing, code signing, and App Store release workflows.
  • Ability to compare Android and iOS implementation tradeoffs without forcing identical architecture or user-interface patterns.
  • Experience contributing to shared mobile conventions, API contracts, design systems, analytics taxonomies, or cross-platform feature parity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a consumer, subscription, healthcare, fintech, marketplace, or other reliability-sensitive mobile product.
  • Knowledge of Kotlin Multiplatform or another selective code-sharing approach, with pragmatic judgment about where sharing helps.
  • Experience with mobile CI/CD, build performance, feature flags, experimentation, and automated release tooling.
  • Familiarity with mobile security, privacy, accessibility standards, and threat modeling.
  • Experience leading migrations such as Views to Compose, monolith to modules, or legacy asynchronous code to coroutines.
