Who We Are:

Taiv is a fast-growing tech startup located in Winnipeg, Canada. Taiv uses AI to make business TV more fun, engaging, profitable, and easier to manage, starting with bars and restaurants. We've built proprietary tech that uses computer vision to watch live TV and improve the content with contextually-aware commercials, content, and games. Our tech also automates the manual AV tasks that venues have to do every day, to make bar management easier, standardized, and more profitable. We're venture-capital backed and graduated from Y Combinator, the world's top tech accelerator, in winter 2020. Program alumni include Airbnb, Instacart, DoorDash, etc. (www.ycombinator.com/topcompanies).

We are looking for a Senior Android Developer to join our growing team!

What We're Looking For:

We run thousands of custom Android boxes in venues, and keeping that fleet stable is a hard, unsolved problem. This role sits on the team that owns the software side of our Android AOSP handoff. You'll expand and help standardize the logging and diagnostics that tell us when something goes wrong and how it happened. You'll also diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks, and work through the low-level bugs and compatibility issues that show up where our software meets our hardware. When the firmware team hits something on the software side, you're who they come to.

This isn't app-layer Android, although you may touch it occasionally. You'll work at the framework and vendor layer, alongside our firmware and embedded engineers, writing software that keeps an IoT device fleet reliable at scale. If you've spent your career in AOSP or vendor Android and want to own reliability for thousands of devices in the field, this is that role.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Expand and help standardize our logging and diagnostic systems so we know when something goes wrong, and how it happened.

  • Diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks in the Android layer.

  • Build systems to identify, prevent, and reduce crashes and devices going offline.

  • Support the Firmware team with integrations and troubleshooting across hardware releases.

  • Take part in a shared on-call rotation for the device fleet.

  • Partner with our embedded, hardware, and firmware engineers on the low-level bugs and compatibility issues where our software meets our hardware.

Who You Are:
  • You operate independently on vendor Android and AOSP-layer work. You don't need instruction or guidance to find your way around unfamiliar framework code.

  • You're comfortable debugging hard, ambiguous problems in a low-level, multithreaded, performance-sensitive platform: memory leaks, crashes, and performance issues with no clear root cause going in.

  • You're at home working alongside embedded teams in an IoT environment.

  • You're comfortable reading Linux and Android device logs, you understand diagnostic and debugging signals, and you can use them to tell the story of what a device has been doing.

  • You work well with firmware and hardware engineers and don't treat the software/hardware boundary as someone else's problem.

Your Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of professional Android development experience. This is not an entry-level position.

  • Experience at the Android framework layer with vendor Android, AOSP, or embedded/IoT Android environments, not just app-layer development

  • Experience developing and maintaining system-level components: init scripts, system services, and device-specific configurations within the AOSP build system (Soong/Make)

  • Solid understanding of Android OS internals: init system, Binder IPC, permissions model, and OTA update mechanisms

  • Strong native debugging skills across the stack, from build artifacts through OS runtime: memory leaks, deadlocks, ANRs, concurrency issues, and boot-time performance

  • Experience with industry-standard IoT device-level logging and diagnostics

  • Comfortable working in various languages, including C/C++ and Java/Kotlin

Perks:
  • Employee stock options

  • 100% employer-covered health benefits

  • Flex-time & unlimited paid vacation

  • Gym membership

  • Catered lunches 3x per week

  • Dog-friendly office

  • Hybrid work model

  • Free parking on-site

Job Details:
  • Job Type: Full-time

  • Salary: $100,000 - $150,000 + stock options

  • Schedule: Monday to Friday

  • Location: Hybrid, in our Winnipeg office
