Primary Purpose:

The Sr. Analytics Engineer is responsible for modeling our complex clinical and operational data into data products that capture how a world-class laboratory functions. Works with Information Technology Staff, Medical Directors, and Lab Managers to understand the nuances of our laboratory operations to augment our data model for modern analytics tooling.

Essential Functions:

Apply software engineering best practices (version control, modularity, and automated testing, etc) to our data transformation layer using industry-standard frameworks such as dbt.

Architect and optimize the query layer to ensure performant analytics across our data lake and warehouse using serverless or managed technologies like Athena, Redshift, or BigQuery.

Own the ingestion and orchestration frameworks that stitch together disparate clinical data sources using modern tools such as Glue, Airflow, or Dagster.

Lead the modernization of ARUP’s data ontology for specific clinical and business domains such as Laboratory Operations, Revenue Cycle, Genomics, and Quality Control.

Contribute to the long-term technical roadmap for our data platform, informing high-level decisions on how to scale cloud-based storage and compute to handle high-volume data.

Collaborate with leadership to collect requirements and write the code for Secure, Timely, Accurate, Trusted, and Extensible (STATE) data products.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.

PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies. 

ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  

Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.

Qualifications Education Required Bachelor's Degree or better. Preferred Master's Degree or better. Experience Required Six plus (6+) years of professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a related technical field, with a proven track record of architecting scalable data models in a cloud environment Preferred Advanced degrees or specialized certifications Expert SQL & Modeling: Mastery of complex SQL and deep experience with modern transformation frameworks (e.g., dbt). You should have experience managing large-scale projects with hundreds of models and complex dependency graphs Cloud Infrastructure: Hands-on experience designing and maintaining data infrastructure within a major cloud provider (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure), including a strong understanding of IAM, VPCs, and encryption Programming Proficiency: Professional-level experience with Python or R for data manipulation, automation, and API integrations Equal Opportunity Employer/Protected Veterans/Individuals with Disabilities

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Master's Degree
  • 6+ years professional experience in data engineering or analytics engineering
  • Mastery of complex SQL and data modeling
  • Experience with dbt or other modern transformation frameworks
  • Hands-on experience designing and maintaining data infrastructure in AWS, GCP, or Azure (including IAM, VPCs, encryption)
  • Professional-level programming in Python or R
  • Experience with cloud data warehouses/engines such as Amazon Athena, Redshift, or Google BigQuery
  • Experience with ingestion and orchestration tools (AWS Glue, Apache Airflow, Dagster)
  • Apply software engineering best practices: version control, modularity, automated testing
  • Experience architecting scalable data models and handling large-scale projects with many models/dependencies
  • Advanced degrees or specialized certifications
