Senior Advisor, Portfolio Management 

 

Join our Portfolio Management team in a senior advisory role, based in Wellington or Auckland, where your technical leadership will help support the management of the Bank’s foreign reserves, domestic liquidity operations and broader balance sheet activities. We’re looking for a senior specialist to support high-quality portfolio and asset allocation decisions, strengthen operational resilience, and lead complex analysis, advice and continuous improvement. You will provide thought leadership, coaching and technical guidance to the team, lead priority workstreams, and support effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders. 

 

Te tūranga – The role  

As a Senior Advisor, Portfolio Management, you will provide senior technical leadership across portfolio management, asset allocation, foreign reserves, domestic liquidity operations and broader balance sheet activity. You will lead complex analysis, strategy development and continuous improvement, while supporting effective decision-making, operational resilience and strong stakeholder engagement across the Bank. 

In this role you will: 

  • Provide senior technical expertise across portfolio management, asset allocation, foreign reserves and domestic liquidity operations. 

  • Lead portfolio management strategies for the Bank’s foreign reserves and domestic market portfolios, including balance sheet management frameworks. 

  • Maintain a whole-of-balance-sheet perspective to support integrated, well-informed portfolio and asset allocation decisions. 

  • Lead complex analysis and advice on portfolio construction, investment strategy, market operations and balance sheet management. 

  • Support monetary policy implementation through domestic liquidity management, market operations and stewardship of the settlement cash system. 

  • Identify and lead continuous improvement across portfolio management processes, models, systems and decision-making frameworks. 

  • Coach, develop and mentor junior staff in portfolio management, asset allocation, market operations and related technical areas. 

  • Build effective internal and external relationships, representing RBNZ with integrity and supporting quality decision-making. 

  • Contribute to broader Financial Markets, Group and cross-functional priorities, projects and programmes. 

  • Demonstrate RBNZ values, operate with a one-team mindset, support Te Tiriti, Te Ao Māori, diversity and inclusion, and take responsibility for health, safety and wellbeing. 

 

Ō pūkenga – About you 

To succeed in this role, you will bring: 

  • At least ten years’ experience in financial markets or central banking in a portfolio management role. 

  • Proven experience managing investment portfolios, including portfolio construction, asset allocation, risk-aware decision-making, performance monitoring and trade execution. 

  • In-depth understanding of financial markets, financial institutions, monetary and other financial policies, including central bank monetary policy tools and operating frameworks. 

  • Experience leading initiatives and projects. 

  • Ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. 

  • Proven experience coaching and mentoring others. 

  • Knowledge and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of NZ National Security Clearance as needed.
