This role serves as a senior-level accountant position within the Financial Reporting Team. The individual in this role will also have the opportunity to support the finance division in a broad range of activities, gain valuable experience, and have exposure to various finance leadership levels and other business functions.   

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Leader in monthly general ledger closing process, including addressing issues, identifying and implementing improvements
  • Maintains general ledger which may include preparing, posting and reviewing monthly journal entries, reconciling and analyzing accounts, or coordinating the reconciliation of accounts to the general ledger
  • Performs quarterly or annual procedures to support financial statement integrity, and researches ad-hoc technical accounting questions 
  • Serves as a resource to the Finance division by providing support and analysis over general technical accounting questions and procedures
  • Fully accountable for at least one significant sub-process within the Financial Reporting Team which may include: investments, cost accounting, expense allocations, premiums receivable, dividends
  • Responsible for assembly and tie-out support of quarterly and annual statement schedules for key assigned areas and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and the Financial Reporting checklist process
  • Supports and provides financial reporting leadership within the external audit process. Collaborates and develops strong partnerships with external audit firm contacts Identify opportunities to streamline and improve upon documentation provided between SECURA and the external firm
  • Participates in monthly financial meetings for discussion and review of monthly financial results and analyzes data for reasonableness 
  • Prepares and distributes complex financial reports in a timely and accurate manner in order to provide management with financial information to make sound business decisions and regulatory agencies to monitor our results
  • Identifies accounting problems, researches solutions, and corrects problems
  • Participates in the ongoing development and maintenance of internal procedures and process improvements
  • Assists in preparing and leading various analytical projects to obtain information as requested by budget owners or business managers throughout the company
  • Partners with Finance management and lead-level team accountants to provide accurate and timely financial information for external auditors, regulators, and rating agencies
  • Takes on special projects to advance the practices of the department
  • Other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:
ESSENTIAL:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Accounting
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an accounting or financial analysis role; knowledge of insurance industry preferred
  • Experience with general ledger and other accounting software solutions required, with experience in administrator responsibilities in a general ledger software solution a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles, regulatory practices, and internal controls over financial reporting
  • Effective organizational skills to maximize time limitations, meet deadlines, and prioritize requests and assigned tasks
  • Strong written and verbal analytical skills with demonstrated ability to interpret and report financial data
  • Strong experience working independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a high-functioning team
  • High degree of discretion / confidentiality, solid problem-solving skills and resolution techniques, and strong attention to detail
  • Senior-level experience with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel/MS Teams

PREFERRED:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, commensurate experience to be considered
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or other professional designation desired
  • 5+ years related experience required
  • Insurance industry experience preferred
