The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the corporate accounting function with a primary focus on month-end close, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and audit support. This is a hands-on role that requires strong execution, attention to detail, and the ability to analyze and resolve accounting issues in a timely manner.
This role ensures the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Corporate Financial Instructions. The Senior Accountant plays a key role in the monthly close process, including preparation of journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and analysis of account activity.
This individual partners across functions to support accounting operations, address inquiries, and ensure consistency in financial processes. Additionally, this role contributes to process improvements, supports internal and external audit requirements, and helps maintain a strong control environment.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $85,000 - $95,000 annually. The actual compensation offered may vary based on job related factors such as experience, skills, education and location. This position is hybrid role located in Richmond, Virginia.
Core Responsibilities:
- Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals and other month-end close activities
- Manage accounting for accruals and prepaid expenses, including monthly amortization and analysis of underlying activity
- Partner with business stakeholders to understand cost drivers, vendor relationships, and ensure accurate and timely expense recognition
- Perform and maintain balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness
- Analyze account activity and investigate variances or unusual trends
- Support the monthly close process to ensure timely and accurate financial results
- Prepare supporting schedules and documentation for internal and external audits
- Assist in maintaining and improving accounting policies, procedures, and process documentation
- Ensure compliance with internal controls and corporate accounting policies
- Partner cross-functionally to resolve accounting issues and respond to inquiries
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Provide support for ad hoc accounting projects and initiatives as needed
Qualifying Experience
- Four-year undergraduate degree in Accounting CPA or CPA candidate preferred
- 4 – 6+ years of progressive accounting experience with strong knowledge of GAAP Public company or public accounting experience preferred
- Experience in Oracle or similar large ERP systems preferred
- Experience working in a control-focused or compliance environment
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent desktop skills such as Excel and Word
- Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams
- Self-starter with strong attention to detail and a continuous improvement mindset
