Job Description

Do you enjoy being the person clients trust with their day-to-day financial lives? Are you the one who catches the error before anyone else does — and knows how to fix it? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven work environment? Matter Family Office is looking for an experienced accounting professional with these qualities who is ready to own client relationships and help develop a growing team.

The Senior Accountant is a key client-facing role in our independent multi-family office, working side by side with internal team members, client vendors, and outside legal, financial, and tax professionals. This role owns the day-to-day relationship for a portfolio of client families and their related entities — serving as the primary point of contact on client email distribution lists — while reviewing the financial statements and bookkeeping prepared by Staff Accountants and escalating complex or sensitive matters to the Accounting Manager.

This includes responsibilities such as:

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for an assigned book of client families, monitoring client email distribution lists and responding to routine, lower-complexity items (bill-pay questions, light reporting requests).
  • Review financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, net worth) and bookkeeping prepared by Staff Accountants for standard clients, ensuring accuracy before publication.
  • Review and, where needed, execute accounts payable and payroll; confirm timely and accurate processing.
  • Own budget-vs-actual analysis for assigned clients and contribute to budgeting and forecasting.
  • Participate in the firm's rolling monthly peer-review and internal-audit process across client entities.
  • Coordinate with third parties, including vendors, bank representatives, accountants, attorneys, and financial advisors.
  • Escalate complex, strategic, or sensitive matters to the Accounting Manager with recommended solutions.
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to Staff Accountants and support their development.
  • Assist in client-meeting preparation and follow-up by issuing reports and ensuring relevant tasks are completed.
  • Complete special projects as requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related course of study; CPA (or active progress toward it) preferred.
  • 4+ years of accounting experience, including 3+ years with QuickBooks Online and associated apps (Bill.com).
  • Proven bookkeeping mastery, plus the ability to review and correct the work of others.
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of partnership accounting, book vs. tax, and estate-planning mechanisms.
  • Strong grasp of what CPAs require to calculate quarterly estimated payments and complete timely, accurate tax returns on behalf of clients.
  • Experience managing individual/family finances, including budgeting, bill pay, loan/investment mechanics, and cash flow.
  • Ability to perform and review complex cashflow and financial-planning analyses.
  • Confident, client-facing communicator — able to field day-to-day questions (bill pay, light reporting) directly with clients and coordinate with third parties.
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, organized, and diligent with follow-up.
  • Excellent time-management skills in a high-volume, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and self-directed with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Mac-based hardware/software.
        Benefits
        • Competitive Salary and Annual Performance-Based Bonus
        • Medical and Dental Health Plans
        • Supplemented Health Savings Account and Health Flexible Spending Account
        • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account
        • Employer Supplemented Health Reimbursement Account Plan
        • Short- and Long-term disability coverage paid for by the employer
        • Paid Group Life Insurance
        • Flexible 401(k) retirement benefits with employer matching
        • 10 paid holidays per year plus competitive vacation and sick leave
        • Cell phone reimbursement plan
        • Opportunity for advancement based on performance, personal growth, and cultural fit
        • Work with a team-oriented culture that supports continuing education and career growth
        • Strong support for volunteer, community and/or industry involvement
