The Sr. Accountant, Payroll Tax oversees the payroll tax function, ensuring compliance with Federal, state, and local regulations. Manages payroll tax filings, remittances, and reconciliations. This role supports strategic initiatives related to payroll tax operations, and provides guidance to the Payroll Tax team, ensuring accurate and timely execution of payroll tax responsibilities.
Responsibilities- Menter and lead Sr. Payroll Tax Specialist and Payroll Tax Specialist
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll tax filings and remittances
- Oversee reconciliation of payroll tax returns and general ledger accounts
- Manage responses to tax notices and coordinate with third-party tax administration providers
- Lead year-end processes including W-2 preparation and balancing
- Monitor changes in tax laws and ensure compliance across jurisdictions
- Support escheatment processes and amended return filings
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to resolve payroll tax issues
- Develop and implement process improvements and automation strategies
- Provide timely responses to all customers and users of payroll tax information. Provide specific requests to both inside and outside auditors. Ensure compliance with all SOX controls.
- Partner with payroll systems support to ensure that systems and reports are efficient, accurate and in compliance with Company controls.
- Participate cross functionally to support SOPs and projects.
- Assist with internal/external audit requests.
- Lead special projects as identified by payroll management team
- Provide WOW! Customer Service to AutoZoners and internal stakeholders
- Lead two staff members indirectly reporting to this position
- Oversee the payroll tax processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting of the Company's payroll tax expenses and liabilities
- Manage the reconciliation of all payroll tax general ledger accounts. Provide reconciling differences and clearing entries on a timely basis
- A Bachelor's degree (BA, BS) or equivalent in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or Financial Systems
- Master's degree preferred
- Three to five years’ experience in payroll tax, accounting, and analysis
- Advanced excel skills and intermediate level for other Microsoft office applications
- Strong human relations, analytical, problem solving, multi-tasking, and communication skills
