Job Description Summary

Senior Accountant for Liabilities will report directly to the Liabilities Manager. This position is responsible for review and maintenance of all MUSC leases through communication with the real estate office, as well as compliance with GASB and FASB standards for leases. Also responsible for pension and other post employment benefit calculations, reconciling deferred inflows and outflows, long-term debt calculations and the payroll liability accounts.

Job Description

- Regular review and maintenance of all leases for the organization.  Must be able to reconcile cash payments to the general ledger to determine if accruals or prepaid adjustments are necessary.  Must coordinate with Accounts Payable in the setup of recurring and one-time lease payments due to landlords.  Must be able to present lease accounting calculations using multiple methodologies, from operating expenses to balances that reflect GASB 87 or ASC 842.  Must become proficient with the Organization’s lease accounting software to calculate net present values for liabilities and assets, as well as articulate incremental borrowing rates and communicate with other affiliated companies on intercompany leases.   Must maintain regular review of leases to determine if re-measurement is applicable based on changes to the lease agreement.  Must deliver ad hoc lease calculations or reports upon request by market.

- Responsible for month-end entries as it relates to interest, leases and pension and OPEB, including the RMC pension.  Entries are entered timely and workpapers are meticulously maintained and tick-marked. 

- Summarize and organize workpapers on a consolidated basis as well as by market and/or facility, if necessary.  Also assist with the independent support organizations of the Health System. Support and tick mark balances and the transaction detail level with appropriate documentation. Assist with the year-end audit. Submit workpapers within a timeline and work with the external auditors to provide additional support as needed. This includes assistance with compiling footnotes and coordination with other general ledger team members in analysis of account balances.

- Calculation of Pension and Other Postemployment Benefit (OPEB) calculations.  Must be able to use historical data and consultation of other agencies to determine projections.  Careful review and understanding of the different components that go into the calculation is essential (i.e. deferred inflows/outflows, net liability, non-employer contributions, expense).  Must also work closely with Payroll to understand quarterly submissions of retirement contributions (Form 1246),  reconciliation to the pension and OPEB workpapers as well as the payroll liability accounts.

Additional Job Description

A bachelor’s degree in a business-related field and four (4) years work experience in a business-related area such as accounting, business, audit or finance. Strong analytical, communication and teamwork skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines; a solid working knowledge or Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, and Outlook software; Microsoft PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat software is a plus. Preferred: A bachelor’s degree in accounting with hospital/healthcare-based work experience; MBA or CPA designation a plus.

Skills Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field
  • Four years work experience in accounting, audit, finance or related area
  • Working knowledge of GASB and FASB lease accounting (GASB 87, ASC 842) and lease accounting methodologies
  • Proficiency reconciling cash payments to the general ledger and making accrual/prepaid adjustments
  • Ability to perform pension and OPEB calculations, including deferred inflows/outflows and net liability
  • Month-end journal entries for interest, leases, pension and OPEB, with timely entries and detailed workpapers
