Senior Accountant – Gift, Endowment & Tax Accounting

The Opportunity  

The Senior Accountant – Gift, Endowment & Tax Accounting reports to the Assistant Controller and plays a key role in supporting the University’s accounting, reporting, analytical, and tax compliance activities related to gifts, pledges, endowments, investments, and other financial activities. This position performs complex reconciliations, prepares journal entries and financial analyses, and supports month-end and year-end close processes.

The Senior Accountant also assists with federal and state tax compliance by preparing workpapers, reconciliations, analyses, and supporting documentation, including activities related to Forms 990 and 990-T and potential unrelated business income tax (UBIT) matters.

Working with a high degree of independence, the Senior Accountant researches and resolves accounting discrepancies, identifies opportunities to improve processes and internal controls, and collaborates with departments across the University to ensure financial information is accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

Required Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Three or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Preferred Skills & Experience

• Experience in higher education or nonprofit accounting.
• Experience with gift, pledge, endowment, investment, or tax accounting.
• Familiarity with nonprofit tax compliance, including Forms 990 and 990-T and UBIT considerations.
• Experience with Workday Financial Management, Salesforce Ascend, or similar enterprise financial or donor management systems.
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy and quality.
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a team-oriented environment.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated professionalism, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
