POSITION SUMMARY:

This position description is intended to identify some of the duties and responsibilities of this position. modoc medical center reserves the right to modify, supplement, delete or augment the duties and responsibilities specified in this position description, at MODOC MEDICAL CENTER’S sole and absolute discretion.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Always demonstrates a professional behavior, both when on duty and as a representative of the hospital outside of normal work hours.
  2. Always demonstrates a positive working relationship with patients, visitors and facility staff. Respectfully to managers and supervisors.
  3. Demonstrates organizational ability and time management.
  4. Produces deliverable products on time, within budget with minimal direction.
  5. Demonstrates the ability to compile and organize data using Microsoft Office Applications. Ability to make appropriate recommendations or conclusions, given the data obtained.
  6. Maintains an organized set of records, delivers records immediately upon request, for the functions that are performed within the scope of this job.
  7. Communicates appropriately, respectfully, and clearly to directors, managers, and coworkers. Accepts direction as provided without questioning authority, within the chain of command.
  8. Performs all assigned tasks accurately.
  9. Takes direction from others to include those employees of other departments with which he/she works on a temporary basis in accordance with the chain of command.
  10. Demonstrates ability to effectively use office machines in the performance of job functions.
  11. Answers phone calls, assists public, and forwards appropriately if necessary in a professional and friendly manner.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Specific Competencies:

  1. Has thorough knowledge of surgical techniques, procedures, and hospital standards, and to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
  2. Must have accountability to complete scheduled tasks of time.
  3. Arranges surgery schedules with patients and surgery staff that is optimum for both. Able to use Word Application to make forms and letters that are used in this department. 
  4. Must be able to work with other departments in scheduling procedures such as Lab, Radiology, and Lab.  
  5. Must be able to help patients with pre-operative instructions.
  6. Needs to have a growing knowledge base of Medical Terminology. 
  7. Orders supplies for surgery. 
  8. Has an understanding of proper positioning, preparation and draping of the patient.
  9. Checks schedules for time, type of operation, anesthesia, and surgeon.
  10. Checks instruments to be used.
  11. Scrubs hands and arms using the proper scrub procedure.
  12. Is systematic, accurate, and conscientious in maintaining aseptic surgical technique.
  13. Uses x-ray detectable sponges, radiopaque laparotomy tapes.
  14. Passes handle end of instruments into operators’ hand and always anticipate his needs.
  15. Places all contaminated instruments in emesis basins and remove from operative field.
  16. Keeps two (2) sutures working; one in the surgeon’s hand and one prepared on the Mayo instrument stand.
  17. Has specimen pan within reach.
  18. Keeps instruments and Mayo stand clean, neat, and in order.
  19. Keeps gloves clean and wet.
  20. Checks sponge, instrument, and needle count with circulating nurse, reports the count to the surgeon as soon as he/she is ready to close.
  21. Assists surgeon as needed.
  22. Assists with transferring patient to and from gurney as needed.
  23. Removes soiled instruments, linens and basins to the cleaning area.
  24. Leaves operating room ready for use.
  25. Assists the surgeon during Endoscopy procedures including retrieving specimens and managing the endoscopy equipment. 
  26. Prepares the procedure room for Endoscopy cases.
  27. Cleans and stores the scopes appropriately.
  28. Leaves the procedure room ready for use. 
  29. Other duties as assigned.

Professional Requirements:

  1. Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and professional.
  2. Completes annual education requirements if applicable.
  3. Maintains regulatory requirements.
  4. Wears identification while on duty.
  5. Attends annual evaluation and participates actively in this process.
  6. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.
  7. Attends all meetings as appropriate.
  8. Exhibits the mission, ethics and goals of Modoc Medical Center in the performance of job duties
  9. Performs other duties, as assigned. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Willingness to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
  2. Is involved with personnel, visitors, and government agencies, etc., when necessary.
  3. Must function independently, have personal integrity, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with other personnel, clients and support agencies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, walks and moves intermittently during working hours.
  2. Repetitive motion with hands and arms. 
  3. Able to lift up to 25 pounds without assistance.  
Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Completed a course for Scrub Technician Training preferable.
  2. BLS Certification
  3. Previous experience preferable.
  4. Ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively.
  5. Above-average interpersonal, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.
  6. Must be a team player to all departments, confidential of sensitive data, respectful of all other staff members, considerate of other people’s time, and accountable for work output.
  7. Flexible to meet the demands of surgery schedules, patients, providers, and co-workers.
  8. Maintain confidentiality relating to MMC personnel and patient information that could result in proprietary damage to MMC. 

Skills Required

  • Completion of Scrub Technician training course
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
  • Previous scrub or surgical experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, written and oral communication skills
  • Team player, maintains confidentiality, respectful and accountable
  • Flexibility to meet variable surgery schedules and demands
  • Maintain confidentiality of personnel and patient information
