Job Description:

The Associate Scientist Sensory Specialist is responsible for supporting regional requirements of the sensory program for the Mars Wrigley NA business, implement site sensory conformance program requirements and support the HKP R&D Product Development team. This position will participate in the sensory community of practice and be back-up lead for the Regional Associate Scientist in their absence.  This position is responsible to perform evaluation of all finished product and ingredient sensory along with problem solving aspects of the position. Additionally, coordinates the daily sensory panels and provides training to site associates to support on-line sensory program as needed. In partnership with the Global Sensory Scientist implements site specific innovations to assure product quality and conformance. What are we looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Engineering, Chemistry or related technical field.

  • Internship in quality and food safety in a manufacturing environment or 1-year technical work experience.

  • Ability to identify flavor, odor and texture.

  • Travel to other sites and vendors required 5-20%.

  • Basic mathematical and computer skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior Sensory experience and leading program implementations and executions.

What will be your key responsibilities?

Regional Sensory Responsibility

  • Back-up lead for Regional Community of Practice.

  • Support Training Initiatives and On-Boarding.
    (Comprehensive training references for Conformance & On-Line, Site Manuals exist to provide step by step daily site activities, Support from Site Sensory Technologists, outside training, i.e., Sensory Spectrum offers on-line: Introduction to sensory evaluation, best practices for product evaluation, the physiology of sensory perception, Co-man training).

  • Support Round Robin calibrations for Regional sites (GIC cannot support, could be provided by site techs, external testing, Global support).

  • Update Nexus Documents (Can be done by relevant sites or support of Global).

  • Non-Conformance Communications/Support
    (Resolution as per escalation protocol).

  • Support HKP R&D product development team for approvals of innovations and product approvements.
    Site Sensory Responsibilities

  • Collect, analyze and interpret sensory data of all raw materials, in-process and finished products to make quality evaluations and recommend action plans. Identify and resolve sensory related issues. Maintain sanitation of the lab.

  • Manage site-based Conformance and Online Sensory Programs – recruit, train and calibrate associates. Implement and execute Conformance Program’s Best Practices and Minimum requirements. Keep records of sensory performance.

  • Responsible for escalations of non-conforming raw materials, in-process and finished products, recommend approval or rejection of ingredients and finished products and follow-up on questionable results in a timely manner.

  • Improve processes and systems through innovation, effective change control, research, and auditing. Conduct Internal audits and support site QMP compliance. Support Co-Manufacturing Sensory Quality assessments and training.

  • Work in partnership with the BU/Global Sensory Scientist to implement innovations in assuring sensory conformance. Active participation with the Sensory Quality Community of Practice (COP) to contribute to ways of working to build synergies across all MW manufacturing sites as well as continuous improvement.

  • Train site and key Associates on KAPPA program. Support additional needs for site initiatives and identified key programs.
