Job Summary: A Scientist I performs sample preparation and under the limited supervision of their direct manager. This position requires the ability to carry out experiments and complete tasks with some degree of uncertainty with an advanced level of judgement and independent thinking.
Essential Responsibilities:
Independent ownership of project work and complete accountability for projects of intermediate complexity
Sample preparation, testing and application without the need for validation by their immediate supervisor
Operation of laboratory manufacturing and testing equipment with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve difficulties
Advanced understanding of formulation techniques and raw materials in one or more technology areas
Serve as a team member/Project Manager in Customization or New Solution/Technology Projects
Provide technical support to internal and external customers
Preparation of internal and external reports
Good housekeeping by maintaining a 6S work environment
Active support of a safe working environment for all employees and visitors
Travel to other Hempel facilities or customers, some international travel
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrates a high level in the quality of their work with a track record of reproducible results
Effective communication with Work Contacts such as peers, manager and other internal departments as well as customers
Ability to work to a timeline, effectively communicate obstacles and self-prioritize work activities
Advanced level of formulation knowledge in one or more technology areas as demonstrated by the ability to make complex formulation adjustments, including raw material choice, to modify properties as required with little to no supervision
Advanced level knowledge of testing procedures as demonstrated by the ability to operate advanced equipment or perform complex testing with very limited supervision
Ability to perform intermediate mathematical calculations such as stoichiometry
Ability to complete reporting requirements such as maintaining a laboratory notebook and/or generating customer ready reports using Microsoft Office to accurately document activities
Ability to work well in a team atmosphere
BA, BS or MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering , Polymer Chemistry or related field OR equivalent years of related experience
1-2+ years’ experience in Coatings or a closely related field preferred

This position requires the ability to work in a laboratory environment which can include solvents, dust and other chemicals. This position requires the employee to be able to perform normal physical labor in relation to the laboratory manufacture and application of coatings samples. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, general office environment. Occasional duties in high noise areas requiring hear protection is required.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and occasional lifting of containers up to 50 lbs., the ability to wear PPE as required, and the ability to stand up to 2 hour periods.
