  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility

The structural Engineering Laboratory (SEL) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is a nationally accredited academic testing laboratory for evaluating the strength and durability of materials and structures. The person filling this position would support the safe and effective operation of SEL by conducting, and/or contributing to, the various SEL testing and evaluation projects using the laboratory hardware, test machines, and monitoring systems. This includes setup and conduct of tests as well as collection and analysis of test data. 

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Conducting testing and research on structural materials and systems and participating in disseminating research via conference and journal papers, etc. (30%)  

  • Participating in proposal writing for industry outreach and sponsored research (20%). 

  • Monitoring and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students’ work in SEL (15%). 

  • Helping maintain and operate SEL test equipment (15%).  

  • Monitoring and enforcing lab safety protocols (10%).  

  • Assisting with community outreach and promotion, including providing lab tours for student recruitment (5%). 

  • Assisting supervisor with SEL national accreditation efforts (5%). 

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to lift a 95pound weight 

Work will be performed primarily on-site.   

Compensation:

$60,000-$70,000 (Final salary offer will be determined based on qualifications and experience)

Required Qualifications:
  • A PhD degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering 
  • At least one year of experience conducting structural engineering research involving laboratory testing, data acquisition, and data analysis 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience operating and managing electromechanical and servo-hydraulic universal test machines such as MTS, Test Resources, Instron and their software/hardware  
  • Evidence of experience using structural analysis and finite element modeling software such as Abaqus, ANSYS, SAP2000, or similar tools for structural engineering applications  

  •  Evidence of experience performing surface coating tests, such as Xenon, UV, and salt fog testing  

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, supervise, and/or train undergraduate and graduate students in a research lab environment  

  • Evidence of participation in proposal development, sponsored research activities, technical reports, conference presentations, and/or peer-reviewed publications  

  • Documented experience supporting laboratory operations, including laboratory safety practices, quality control procedures, and/or accreditation activities such as ISO 17025 

Education:

PhD degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on structural engineering.
