The Role

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with over 300 employees.

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking a talented and adaptable Scientist II to join the growing Bioassay Innovation and Discovery team within the Innovation and Data Generate at Scale department. Using state-of-the-art lab automation technologies, the candidate will play a key role in the design, execution, and analysis of high-throughput screening (HTS) assays to evaluate the company’s proprietary biomolecules. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in protein biochemistry or cell biology and experience in the development and execution of biochemical and cell-based assays in HTS formats for a variety of programs that span across different disease areas and therapeutic modalities. This role requires a strong interest in bench work, practical lab experience and an ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where they will join a collaborative multi-disciplinary team. In addition, the candidate will have the opportunity to perform large scale data analysis and utilize the data for drug optimization via machine learning (ML) based approaches. This is an exciting opportunity with high growth potential in an innovative biotech startup company.

  • Develop biochemical and cell-based assays (384-well plate format) for HTS automation workflows to interrogate the MOA of therapeutics and generate high quality data sets to build ML models.
  • Work closely with automation engineers to perform HTS campaigns, and work with informatics engineers and machine learning scientists to streamline data analysis workflow linking to the internal LIMS and interactive learning cycles.
  • Convert traditional biochemical and cell-based assays into HTS amenable formats.
  • Troubleshoot experimental design and assay optimization.
  • Work with external vendors to bring in new HTS technologies.
  • Analyze experimental data and present results at project meetings.

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, pharmacology, immunology, bioengineering or a related field with 0-2 years of relevant experience, MSc with 6+ years of relevant experience, or a BSc with 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient with general mammalian cell culture techniques including maintaining primary/immortalized cells, cell line engineering, in vitro bioassay development, etc.
  • Experience in high throughput plate-based assay technologies including ELISA, HTRF, LANCE, AlphaLISA, luminescence, flow cytometry, etc.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, fast-paced, team-oriented environment with colleagues from diverse disciplines.
  • Experience with lab automation technologies (HighRes, Biomek i5/i7, plate washers, liquid handling systems, etc.).
  • Expertise in T cell biology and tumor immunology is a plus.
  • Experience in computational methods, data science, and/or coding is a plus
