We are seeking a Research Associate, Technology Development who is ready to bring their expertise to a high-impact environment and help us build a brand-new category of technology.

About the Role

In this role you will perform, analyze, and interpret the characterization of our nanoelectronic semiconductor devices at various stages of their lifecycle. Such characterization makes up a crucial part of our quality control process to ensure received devices meet the required specifications and also provides crucial feedback following experimentation as part of our test and learning cycles. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Physics, Materials Science and or Nanotechnology, be rigorous and detail oriented, work well within a highly interdisciplinary environment and be eager to learn and contribute.

Responsibilities

  • Perform characterization of devices using a wide range of metrology techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM), photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nanoelectronic measurements.
  • Work closely with outside vendors, collaborators, and fabrication partners to coordinate the characterization of devices using techniques such as time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIM/nano-SIMs), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
  • Prepare reports on pristine (as received) nanoelectronic devices using the techniques listed above as part of our standard quality control processes.
  • Prepare experimental summaries characterizing devices after various experiments to provide feedback as part of our test and learning cycles.
  • Understand the requirements of our nanoelectronic devices and propose characterization techniques to ensure devices meet these specifications.
  • Maintain detailed and meticulous records of all experimental work and analysis.
  • Effectively communicate experimental results, data analysis, and next steps with our chip fabrication, device measurements, surface chemistry teams, and the wider company.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology or a closely related field with >0-3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Some experience using advanced metrology techniques such as AFM, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, or TOF-SIMs.
  • Understanding of electron transport physics and electrochemistry, ideally at nanoelectrodes.
  • Strong data analysis and scripting experience is desirable.
  • Experience working in the semiconductor industry or biotechnology is a plus.
  • Must be a creative and detail-oriented person with excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills and ability to work seamlessly in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San Francisco.
  • Mobility: Must be able to move about the laboratory and office environment regularly. This includes standing and walking for extended periods, often up to 6–8 hours per day.
  • Manual Dexterity: Must have fine motor skills and steady hands to handle delicate instruments, operate laboratory equipment, pipette accurately, and perform repetitive benchwork with precision.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally, such as boxes of lab supplies or equipment.
  • Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to read small print on labels, instrument displays, and computer monitors. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequently exposed to typical laboratory conditions, including biological samples, chemicals, and reagents. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles as required.

Skills Required

  • PhD in Electrochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Physics or closely related field
  • More than 5 years experience in research, development, and commercialization of electrochemical biosensors
  • Hands-on expertise in cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ac voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and sensor characterization on solid substrates
  • Strong understanding of electron transfer kinetics at microelectrodes
  • Proven track record developing ultra-sensitive electrochemical bioassays and integrating them with microelectronic or semiconductor devices
  • Experience optimizing electrode interfaces and solution formulations to increase electrode current densities
  • Experience performing electrochemistry on high-density electrode arrays
  • Strong data analysis and scripting experience
  • Experience in a biotech or pharma R&D environment
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills; creative and detail-oriented
  • Exceptional collaboration skills and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
