Job Description

The Science Librarian will act as liaison to science departments on campus, offering innovative support for the teaching, learning, and academic research in science disciplines such as Psychology, Computer Science, and Chemistry, and will be a key contributor to data literacy initiatives across the disciplines. This Librarian will work collaboratively as a key member of the Research Services team to build a community of students who are information literate and confident lifelong learners. The Librarian will work collaboratively with LTS colleagues and faculty to develop, manage, and maintain the Library's collections to support science education and research.

The Librarian will continually assess science disciplinary needs, seeking thoughtful ways to address them through collaborations with faculty and fellow instructors on assignment design, integrated instruction, individual consultations, and support for independent learning. As part of the deeply merged Research and Instruction Support team of librarians and instructional technologists, the Librarian supports faculty and students in all disciplines in the exploration and application of new technologies and methodologies for digital scholarship and scholarly inquiry.

Primary Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides course-integrated research and instruction and support in knowledge and behaviors of information literacy within science disciplines, including reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities 

  • of learning.

  • In collaboration with LTS colleagues and faculty, selects appropriate materials and formats in support of the curriculum in scientific and related disciplines. Evaluates new and existing materials within a complex information landscape. 

  • Provides individual consultations on research strategies to Community members; consults with faculty members to ensure the availability of library materials to support classroom instruction; provides programs and services designed to educate new and existing users in the effective use of library materials.

  • Collaborates with LTS colleagues to support faculty and students in data discovery, interpretation, visualization, and management (including advising on Data Management Plans for grant funding). Keeps up to date with new and evolving trends in science librarianship. 

  • Provides operational support and leadership as appropriate for research-related [non-curricular] services and programs, which might include the Albright Institute, development of open educational resources, or other programs. Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access publishing are particularly important in the sciences, and this role provides essential cross-disciplinary knowledge and leadership to these endeavors.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Library and Information Sciences or equivalent.

  • Academic background in a science field taught at the College such as physics, biology, chemistry, psychology, computer science, and/or significant experience supporting the sciences.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer’s sponsorship now or in the future

Skills and Abilities:

  • An understanding of the mission of higher education and the required support of library resources in the liberal arts.

  • Ability to evaluate library materials according to institutional criteria and guidelines. 

  • Knowledge of and interest in following new developments in scientific data gathering techniques, sources, analysis, and visualization.

  • Professional skills in public services, library instruction, and research consultation.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the organization and classification of information resources (national and international standards).

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; teaching and presentation skills that include the use of information technology when appropriate.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with all colleagues to address a range of projects; building and maintaining relationships, listening actively, and contributing productively.

Salary:

The pay range for this role is $80,000.00 - $90,000.00
