We are currently recruiting a Sales Manager to join our Field Sales Team for our Atlantic Territory.

Job Description

Major Home Centre Business Development – 40%

  • Drives in-store sales in conjunction with the Sales and Marketing teams’ goals.
  • Vendor Managed Inventory: Fully manages the inventory and ordering process at various big box retailers.
  • Develops key customer relationships and uses fact-based selling and marketing techniques to influence the assignment of incremental display space for Scotts brands at major home center retail partners.
  • Ensures 100% compliance with promotional displays at major home center retail partners.
  • Builds effective relationships internally (within Scotts) and externally (with customers’ associates and consumers).
  • Effectively presents sales opportunities and executes sales plans with customers’ Seasonal Managers, Department Managers and Store Managers at major home center retail partners.
  • Uses marketing tactics and product knowledge to create sales strategies to take advantage of localized market conditions and related opportunities.
  • Mines the middle with District Managers, Regional Managers and other middle management key decision makers as defined by Manager at major home center retail partners. 
  • Provides semi-annual business line reviews to various big box retailers
  • Provides product knowledge and education to customers and consumers including offering retailer PK workshops for both staff and consumers.

Regional Business Development - 20%

  • Drives sales growth by developing and implementing annual account programs, promotional plans, and merchandising agreements.
  • Secures product distribution and provides retailers with guidance on advertising, promotions, merchandising (including POP materials), and co-op fund usage.
  • Manages sales logistics through accurate SKU-level forecasting and securing product orders to meet demand, while resolving service issues.

Administration – 10%

  • Completes all administrative paperwork within required deadlines, M&C payroll, applicant tracking, training, surveys, expense reports, etc.. 
  • Complies with all Company policies, procedures and practices including Health & Safety.

     Team Leadership – 30%

  • Communicates Company’s Mission & Vision Statements, Strategies, etc. and models cultural attributes
  • Recruits, interviews and manages direct reports
  • Trains and develops direct reports plus supports learning/education programs to further develop direct reports)
  • Coaches and counsels direct reports
  • Contributes to the update and development of job descriptions, role profiles and performance measurement tools for direct reports as required
  • Conducts team meetings as required
  • Manages a budget to support territory needs and approves travel and business expenses of direct reports
  • Uses every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety; informs workers of job hazards; trains them to do their jobs safely; ensures that workers work safely and uses equipment and protective devices properly where required; reports all incidents to the Joint Health & Safety Committee and Sales Management in a timely fashion
  • Terminates employment of direct reports where necessary
  • Partners and communicates with Regional Sales Manager, Human Resources on issues as appropriate

Job Specifications (Minimum Requirements)

Skill Factors (education, experience, communication, technical, etc.)

  • Post-secondary Education OR equivalent field sales experience
  • Two-years territory field sales and merchandising experience
  • One year supervisory experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for interaction with customers and prospective business
  • Ability to negotiate and persuade others
  • Excellent sales presentation skills and ability to speak in front of large groups

Effort Factors (physical and mental demands)

  • Must be able to lift, push and pull up to 54 kg (60 lbs.)
  • Ability to occasionally climb an 2-4 metres (8-12 ft.) ladder and reach overhead
  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems to determine resolution
  • Strong organizational and follow up skills
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
  • Effective time management – ability to manage self, time and priorities

Working Conditions

  • Works the standard schedule of 37.5 hours per week; however, job requirements will include additional and/or extended work time as the business dictates especially during Season. Especially during the spring and summer months.
  • Effective handling of stress/pressure when completing large workload within a compressed time frame
  • Evening and weekend work is necessary
  • Regular travel throughout territory including ability to travel overnight by automobile or airline
  • Works in “big box” retail stores with natural and artificial light exposure; forklifts and/or similar machinery is present
  • Exposed to changes in temperature and humidity including indoor/outdoor working conditions
  • Must have appropriate space designated for Home Office

Other

  • Valid drivers license for designated territory(ies)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
