Job Summary
The Safety Program Specialist is responsible to act as a subject matter expert and provide support to the Safety leadership team and NiSource business functions. The Safety Program Specialist may be responsible for the oversight of compliance-related programs. This role supports specific areas of safety focus which may include: Project Management, Risk Assessment, Risk Management, Compliance Program Creation and Sustainability, Human Factors and Incident Investigation. The Safety Program Specialist acts as a key point of contact with various supporting departments that are impacted by compliance/core driven safety programs. This role provides program impact to the required Change Management/ Management of Change departments to ensure smooth roll out of required programs. The Safety Program Specialist supports the development of NiSource Safety teams' expertise in the development and execution of safety programs, initiatives, communications, processes and process improvements, and safety data management systems.
Essential Functions
Oversight and support of the companies connected gas detection and lone worker program
Provide counsel in the creation and sustainability of compliance-driven programs
Project manage NiSource-wide safety initiatives
Maintain safety programs reports, and prepare status updates for key stakeholders
Deliver training as needed
Collaborate with internal/external customers, suppliers and partners to ensure we are meeting commitments
Provide direction as needed for existing safety programs throughout the NiSource footprint
Plan and facilitate project meetings
Record and track project requirements according to internal and external customer needs
Act as a mentor to other safety professionals
Suggest and implement recommendations for continuous improvement
Revise corporate processes as appropriate
Manage projects off differing complexity and impact will differ
Coordinate communication with all areas of the enterprise to assist in the effective rollout of initiatives and programs that result in advancing the safety culture
Travel as needed
The successful candidate’s experience will dictate the level at which they are hired into NiSource.
Seasoned professional with in-depth knowledge in own discipline and basic knowledge of related disciplines
May lead projects and manage processes
Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions
Works independently with limited supervision
Coaches and reviews the work of colleagues with less experience
Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures
Typically requires at least three to five years of relevant work experience
May represent the level at which career may stabilize for many years or even until retirement
Required Qualifications For Position
- Bachelor's degree from accredited institution or equivalent work experience
Experience in the utility industry
Experience with group facilitation and information gathering
Analytical, planning, organization, and verbal/written communication skills
Demonstrated public speaking and presentation skills
Ability to drive and monitor continuous improvement and associated change management
Ability to drive execution using a formal methodology
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to quickly assess and make sound decisions
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
Ability to gather and analyze data to make informed decisions
Ability to accurately obtain, interpret, and transcribe a variety of communications and instructions
Ability to recognize and evaluate risks, hazards, losses and prevent conflicts between activities
Ability to learn software programs
Proficiency in the Microsoft suite, in particular Excel and Power Point.
Ability to collaborate in a remote working environment
Demonstrated applications of Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action planning
Demonstrated understanding of contractor management
Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position
Experience in safety programs and reporting
Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Occupational Safety certification (CSP, ASP, etc.) or safety degree Upon Hire
Certified Estimator-ASPE Occupational Safety certification (CSP, ASP, etc.) or safety degree Upon Hire
Portfolio Management Professional (PMP) Upon Hire

Salary Range*:
$82,200.00 - $123,200.00*The salary offered to a candidate is based on several factors including but not limited to the candidate’s skills, job-related knowledge, and relevant experience, as well as internal pay equity.
