Summary

Haven Charter High School is the first SUNY-authorized Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school in NYC focused on the Health Sciences sector. Opening in July 2025 with an inaugural class of 120 ninth-grade students, Haven will offer students meaningful pathways to both college and career success.

The Safety Specialist is a highly visible member of the school community responsible for supporting the safety, security, and daily operations of Haven Charter High School. This role helps maintain a safe, welcoming, and orderly environment for students, staff, families, and visitors while serving as a positive adult presence throughout the school day.

The Safety Specialist combines traditional school safety responsibilities with a youth-centered approach that emphasizes relationship building, professionalism, prevention, and proactive support. The ideal candidate understands how to engage adolescents respectfully while maintaining clear professional boundaries, consistently enforcing safety protocols, and supporting a positive school culture.

Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Safety Specialist monitors school facilities, supervises student movement, supports arrival and dismissal procedures, assists with off-site student supervision, and works collaboratively with school staff to ensure the physical safety and security of the school community.

Essential Functions

Under the supervision of the Director of Facilities, the Safety Specialist is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Student and Campus Safety

  • Monitor and secure assigned entrances, exits, and designated areas of the building.
  • Conduct routine patrols of hallways, stairwells, common areas, restrooms, and exterior spaces to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Support student arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch periods, assemblies, and other school activities.
  • Assist with visitor management procedures, including monitoring access points and ensuring compliance with school safety protocols.
  • Respond promptly to safety concerns, incidents, emergencies, and building-related issues.
  • Report safety, maintenance, and security concerns to the Director of Facilities and school leadership.
  • Support emergency preparedness efforts, including drills, evacuations, lockdown procedures, and other safety protocols.
  • Monitor and support adherence to school safety procedures by students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain awareness of campus activities and proactively identify potential safety concerns before they escalate.

Student Supervision and Support

  • Maintain a visible presence throughout the school and serve as a positive role model for students.
  • Build professional, respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Provide redirection and support to students in alignment with school expectations and procedures.
  • Assist with monitoring student movement throughout the building during instructional and non-instructional periods.
  • Support school staff by helping maintain safe and orderly learning environments.
  • Accompany and supervise students traveling between school locations and during off-site activities, including transportation to and from physical education and other school-sponsored programs.
  • Collaborate with Student Support Services and school leadership to reinforce school culture, student engagement, and positive behavioral expectations.

Operational Support

  • Rotate among assigned posts and responsibilities throughout the school day to ensure comprehensive campus coverage.
  • Assist with school events, special programs, testing days, family events, and other operational needs.
  • Support the Director of Facilities with building operations, safety inspections, and campus readiness initiatives.
  • Assist with monitoring deliveries, vendors, contractors, and visitors entering the building.
  • Collaborate with school leadership, Student Support Services, and instructional staff to support a positive and productive school climate.
  • Contribute to a culture of professionalism, accountability, and service throughout the school community.
  • Perform other duties assigned by school leadership.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in school safety, security, youth development, law enforcement, community-based organizations, education, or related fields preferred.

Clearance

Employees must be cleared to work at Haven Charter High School. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings. Department of Education (DOE) fingerprint clearance is required.

Physical Demands

This position requires frequent standing, walking, stair climbing, and movement throughout the school building and surrounding areas. The Safety Specialist is expected to actively patrol assigned areas, supervise students, monitor building activity, and respond to safety concerns throughout the school day. The role may require prolonged periods of standing, monitoring large groups of students, and occasionally lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Expected Work Schedule

  • Full-time | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
  • Occasional evenings or weekends may be required based on school needs, special events, family engagement activities, or emergency situations.
