Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About the Safety Specialist Position 

As a Safety Specialist, you are accountable for implementing and overseeing occupational and operational safety programs and initiatives in assigned area. The Safety Specialist provides Colonial, Safety subject matter expertise to facilitate, and promote enhanced Safety awareness through application of Safety processes and achievement of established Safety objectives This role presents a positive image of health and safety to foster cooperative relationships, motivating and influencing individuals to value and take personal ownership of safety. The Safety Specialist responds to emergencies at assigned level within in the District Emergency Spill Response plan and Spill Management Team. 

 

What You Get to Do: 

  • Engender safety awareness, trust and commitment, and connect with the workforce to communicate the importance of safety, and to positively influence compliance with safety objectives.   

  • Facilitate Safety incident analysis (IA’s) as required for reported incidents.  

  • Advise Management on all Tier 1 incidents, lead Tier 2, 3, and 4 incidents as assigned.  

  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with MOC procedures to ensure: changes to equipment, procedures or process safety information, are assessed for new or modified hazards and ensure changes are effectively communicated.  

  • Complete and document construction and maintenance worksite inspections and work with employees and contractors to address any exceptions found during the inspections.  

  • Conduct critical work assessments and behavior-based observations as directed and communicate findings to District Safety Manager. 

  • Complete and document facility inspections, and communicate findings and make recommendations for correction, and follow-up with Manager, local Operations, and others to ensure successful resolution of outstanding inspection issues.  

  • Provide safety expertise by observing construction and maintenance worksite conditions, equipment and worker behavior to ensure safety and security procedures and regulations are followed.  

  • Attend pre-job safety meetings/kickoffs, and review and provide guidance during the development of Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Project Safety Plans as needed.  

 

What You Bring to the Table: 

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited education intuition. 

  • Ideally, 3+ years of safety related work experience or ideally, 5+ years of pipeline operations experience with active participation in safety. 

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time. 

  • Physical ability to respond to emergencies and prior emergency response experience.   

  • Solid knowledge of OSHA Standards.  

  • Ability to successfully perform multiple tasks/projects in high pressure and time restricted situations. 

  • Ability to recognize, research and resolve gaps identified in the company safety process. 

  • Commitment to consistently adhere to policies and procedures and be a positive example for others by demonstrating the Company’s core values of Respect, Accountability, Innovation, Safety, and Excellence in completing work assignments.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:  

Work may occasionally require exposure to weather or outside environmental conditions to inspect, audit, validate processes and procedures, or respond to health and safety situations. Visual acuity to read and prepare reports and documentation. Ability to communicate in order to understand instructions, convey information and receive information Digital dexterity for operation of calculator, PC keyboard and mouse.
