As a member of the deployed safety team, the Safety Generalist will provide guidance with primary responsibilities to the Infrastructure Services and Security and Emergency Services Directorates which encompasses safe operation and maintenance of the entire Argonne Campus which includes but is not limited to:

The Safety Generalist will serve as a strategic link between laboratory health, safety, and environmental programs and IS line management and front-line workers. The Safety Generalist will collaborate with the IS Directorate to ensure compliance with DOE orders, safety requirements and identify and help drive improvements in safety.  This role involves providing strategic daily field support for IS work activities, with specific focus on front-line workers and assisting line management.

Key Responsibilities

Integrated Safety Management: 

  • Ensure ESH considerations are embedded in all phases of IS work activities including preplanning, appropriate hazard controls, and a consistent approach to execution of work.
  • Ensure the identification and mitigation of hazards and controls within diverse work environments with specific focus on chemical, mechanical, and electrical safety concerns potentially impacting IS employees.

Leadership and Support: 

  • Collaborate with line management and subject matter experts to ensure compliance and identify improvements to hazard evaluation and workplace safety planning.
  • Serve as a safety advisor to line management and collaborating with others to provide innovative and sustainable solutions.

Safety Oversight: 

  • Provide support for facility safety inspections, event response, audits, and incident investigations, ensuring appropriate follow-up actions and driving continuous improvement. 
  • Daily field observation of IS work activities. 
  • Collaborating with Subject Matter Experts (SME) and /or Construction Safety Team when appropriate to determine appropriate hazard controls for planned work.

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Basic working knowledge of OSHA industrial and construction safety practices.
  • Fundamental understanding of hazardous energy control and electrical safety requirements.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and drive change. 
  • Ability to effectively engage SME’s to assist in planning and execution of work commensurate with risk. 
  • Commitment and motivation to provide timely customer service. 
  • Willingness to interact at the customer’s work location and lead field-based safety initiatives. 
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree related to Occupational Safety or related discipline and 2+ years of safety experience. 
  • Holding or motivated to obtain certifications such as Associate Safety Professions (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Experience in hazardous energy control and electrical safety knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of chemical safety, ergonomics, material handling, energy isolation, and/or hazard analysis.

The expected hiring range for this position is $69,750.00 - $108,810.00.
