PURPOSE: RJM is ready to welcome a dynamic and collaborative Safety Director with a passion for developing connections with our team members. The Director plays a vital role cultivating and communcating a best in class safety culture, ensuring OSHA compliance and other industry standard compliance. This role leads the development and implementation of company-wide stafety intiatives and KPI's policies and procedures to ensure the ongoing health and safety of our employees, partners and clients.
- The successful candidate is self-motivated with a positive and engaging approach to building credibility and safety accountability throughout the company.
- Uses a whole life approach integrating safety into everything we do using Culture of Care, equity, inclusion and mental health attention and collaboration with all departments.
- Leads development of and clearly articulates Company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures in order to build a safety culture dedicated to behaviors which lead to best-in-class results.
- Provides proactive leadership and assumes ownership of building a best-in-class safety culture by 1) anticipating problems & providing solutions, 2) sharing knowledge with, and providing training, to all levels of management, field staff, preconstruction, and project teams, 3) through interactions with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors, and 4) creating an environment of learning, mentoring, and empowerment in order to promote employee engagement.
- Uses logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and conclusions, and monitors results to make improvements or take corrective action.
- Ensures safety & health training meet the needs of internal and external (client & regulating entities) requirements, so staff has the safety training to safely perform tasks and jobs.
- Leads incident investigations.
- Reviews and comments on crane pick plans
- Interacts with OSHA representatives in connection with both scheduled and unscheduled site visits and investigations
- Manages hazard assessment activities by 1) conducting and/or supervising safety inspections, and 2) analyzing inspection and incident data to identify opportunities to develop preventive and corrective practices.
- Develops annual plans and budgets for safety & health initiatives, including training.
- Leads and manages the safety staff; develops a high-performance, customer-oriented work team, through hiring, motivating, coaching, appraising, rewarding & disciplining, and addressing complaings and resolving issues related to staff.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Construction Management or equivalent. Proven experience may be substituted for degree.
- Professional Safety Certification preferred (OSHA 500, CSP, etc.)
Work Experience:
- Minimum 10 years construction industry experience or a combination of education and experience providing equivalent knowledge.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing a structured safety program; self-performing general contractor or specialty contractor preferable.
Demonstrated Technical Competencies to include:
- Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; able to operate safety equipment, monitoring devices, camera.
- In depth technical knowledge of construction related OSHA, federal, state, and local regulatory standards, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement effective corrective practices.
- Prior practice incorporating whole person safety concept into day-to-day activities.
Demonstrated Professional Competencies to include:
- Strong organizational skills
- Displays strong written, oral communication skills and effective listening skills.
- Analyze problems and make sound decisions in a timely manner based on objectives, risks, implications, and costs.
- Tactful and mature demeanor with well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to work well with diverse personalities.
- Experience managing staff and third party hired firms.
- Must be an effective communicator, generating professional written material and delivering effective verbal presentations.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Other Functions
- Manages safety incentive programs which reward targeted behaviors & results.
- Manages workers comp & vehicle claims.
- Manages return to work/restricted duty program.
- Leads or participates in Safety Committee.
- Manages administration of motor vehicle records program.
