The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to oversee and advance our statewide occupational safety and health programs. This role provides the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the safety and well-being of thousands of employees across Highway, DMV, and other transportation operation areas.
The Assistant Director supervises NCDOT’s statewide Occupational Safety and Health Program and leads a team of five Safety Consultants, along with oversight of the Department’s Industrial Hygiene Program. This position serves as the principal technical resource for safety and health professionals across NCDOT, supporting Raleigh-based staff and administering key statewide safety contracts, including hearing conservation and safety footwear programs.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic leadership and technical guidance for high-risk safety programs, including Fleet Safety, Trenching and Shoring, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Crane Operations, General Construction Safety, and Blasting Operations.
• Identify, address, and resolve performance challenges within the safety organization.
• Foster collaboration and build consensus between safety staff, management, and organizational partners.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety performance and reduce workplace risk.
• Establish priorities and manage the allocation of funds for pilot projects, safety innovations, emerging technologies, and initiatives aimed at reducing injuries, equipment-related accidents, and Workers’ Compensation costs.
• Oversee statewide programs and contracts that support employee safety and health.
This position reports directly to the NCDOT Director of Safety and Risk Management. This position directly influences NCDOT’s ability to maintain a safe, compliant, and proactive work environment. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC21 $70,627 - $137,724

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of occupational safety and health principles and practices sufficient to analyze complex issues and recommend practical, effective solutions
  • Considerable knowledge of applicable federal and state occupational safety and health regulations, security requirements, and industry best management practice.
  • Knowledge of current technologies, methodologies, and emerging trends in the occupational safety and health profession
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, organize, direct, and supervise the work of professional staff
  • Demonstrated ability to identify workplace hazards and risks and develop strategies to mitigate or eliminate them

Bachelor's degree in safety management, occupational safety, industrial technology or one of the physical sciences from an appropriately accredited institution from an appropriately accredited institution and a minimum of five years of progressive occupational safety and health experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
