Summary - Safety Case Review Engineer:

A Periodic Review is required approximately every ten years to confirm that the existing Safety Case remains fit for purpose on a facility involved in the storage of Special Nuclear Materials.

As part of that review, it is necessary to confirm that the radiological safety assessments (including internal and external hazards) remain of a suitable standard compared with modern standards and that any ‘gaps’ in this area are either recorded as not significant enough to warrant revision or are added to a potential schedule of improvements to be addressed according to their significance and priority.

This overall scope of work is to support the identification of gaps by reviewing the radiological safety assessments making up the existing Safety Case as part of a multidisciplinary team and to record the findings. Also, to assist the ALARP Review of these findings and then assist with the development of an Improvement Plan to address any reasonable improvements agreed at the ALARP Review.

The scope is divided into three packages of work; each supporting an individual facility but mindful of the symmetries between them so that the opportunity is taken to identify learning worth sharing between them and to ensure an optimised gap identification and close out strategy.
