 Job Summary:
Encora is looking for a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our remotely distributed Commerce team. This role goes beyond building software—it's about enhancing the reliability, performance, and maintainability of the financial systems that power our platform. As part of the team responsible for billing, payment processing, payouts, and taxes/fees, you’ll directly impact the financial experience of both customers and taskers.

You’ll work with a collaborative team to build robust backend systems, tackle complex challenges, improve operational excellence, and lead by example through best practices in code quality and engineering rigor.

 Responsibilities and Duties:

• Design, develop, and maintain Ruby on Rails backend payment systems integrated with third-party providers like Stripe and Sovos.

• Debug and refactor legacy code, and manually test features for usability and accuracy.

• Diagnose and resolve system errors using tools like Datadog, ensuring issues are addressed and prevented.

• Write complex SQL queries to identify and resolve payment system discrepancies in Snowflake and optimize legacy query performance.

• Automate and streamline investigation tasks to improve efficiency and resolution speed.

• Design and implement observability and monitoring systems to improve system visibility and health tracking.

• Guide development best practices and optimize application performance across the Ruby on Rails codebase.

• Champion test-driven development with comprehensive RSpec unit and integration tests.

• Collaborate with product managers and engineering peers to convert complex requirements into maintainable solutions.

• Contribute to code reviews and mentor team members through constructive feedback.

• Document designs, decisions, and system insights to promote knowledge sharing.

 Qualifications and Skills:

• Minimum 5 years of experience developing production applications using Ruby on Rails.

• Strong expertise in SQL and working with complex data queries in production environments.

• Skilled in root cause analysis and solving complex system issues.

• Solid experience with observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or New Relic.

• Ability to enhance legacy code for improved reliability and performance.

• Proven experience across the full software development lifecycle.

• Advanced testing skills using RSpec for unit and integration testing.

• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

• Strong sense of ownership and a drive for continuous improvement.

 Role-specific Requirements:

• Experience with payment systems, billing platforms, or fintech is highly desirable.

• Understanding of financial transaction data integrity and reconciliation.

• Ability to design scalable and accessible data models suitable for downstream stakeholders such as data engineering or accounting teams.
