We are currently seeking Roll Grinder at our Hot Rolling Processing Facility (HRPF) at our Brackenridge Operations in Brackenridge, PA. Roll Grinder Operator is responsible for heavy assembly and regrinding of various size mill rolls, for a Hot Mill application.
Essential Functions:
- Calibrate test equipment and maintain both written and automated database records.
- Perform mechanical repair of roll grinding machines and equipment
- Select, mount and install grinding wheels on various machines
- Utilize both radio controlled overhead cranes and jib cranes to:
- Move rolls and assemblies in/out of the machines as needed
- Move rolls about the shop to support mill operations
- Load & unload trucks as needed
- Rough turn and finish grind rolls to exact shape, finish and tolerances on various machines
- Check roll surface quality for:
- Roughness using hand held perthometer
- Hardness using hand held hardness tester, and understand the various scaling systems and be able to correlate readings from one scale to another using charts and graphs
- Roll diameter using hand held micrometer, Pi-tape, or automated caliper inspection system, using both metric and imperial micrometers and equipment
- Roll shape using saddle micrometer or automated caliper inspection system
- Visual inspection of roll surface to identify chatter or wheel marks.
- Ability to read and interpret sketches and blueprints, in both metric and imperial units of measurement.
- Adjust, lubricate and maintain Roll Grinder machines and equipment as needed
- Record final roll grinding information either manually or with automated recording system
- Calibrate & troubleshoot roll grinding machines as needed to bring them back on line
- Operate fork trucks and various equipment to move large items as needed
- Understand and able to fluently work with the metric system and convert back and forth to imperial units as needed.
- Must be detail oriented and focused on accuracy to ensure roll surface characteristics are correct.
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Graduate of an approved apprentice program, vo-tech or technical school with the attainment of Journeyman's papers in General Machining or Tool & Die trades.
OR
- Minimum equivalent and verifiable experience of three years working as a Roll Grinder, Machinist, or Tool & Die trades operating both manual & automated machines
- Must pass a mechanical aptitude test & be able to lift 50 lbs

Skills Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Graduate of approved apprentice program, vo-tech or technical school with Journeyman's papers in General Machining or Tool & Die (OR minimum equivalent verifiable experience of three years as Roll Grinder, Machinist, or Tool & Die)
- Minimum equivalent and verifiable experience of three years working as a Roll Grinder, Machinist, or Tool & Die trade operating manual and automated machines
- Must pass a mechanical aptitude test
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Experience operating radio-controlled overhead cranes, jib cranes, and fork trucks
- Ability to read and interpret sketches and blueprints in metric and imperial units
- Proficiency with measurement and inspection tools (perthometer, handheld hardness tester, micrometers, Pi-tape, saddle micrometer, automated caliper systems) and ability to record calibration/inspection data
- Experience rough turning and finish grinding rolls to required tolerances and surface finish
- Detail oriented with focus on accuracy for roll surface characteristics
