At ABB, we help industries outrun - leaner and cleaner. Here, progress is an expectation - for you, your team, and the world. As a global market leader, we’ll give you what you need to make it happen. It won’t always be easy, growing takes grit. But at ABB, you’ll never run alone. Run what runs the world.
This role sits within ABB's Robotics business, a leading global robotics company. We're entering an exciting new chapter as we’ve announced the plan for SoftBank Group to acquire ABB Robotics. SoftBank is a globally recognized technology group and investor/operator focused on AI, robotics, and next-generation computing. By joining us now, you’ll be part of a pioneering team shaping the future of robotics—working alongside world-class experts in a fast-moving, innovation-driven environment.
This Position reports to:
R&D Team Lead
In this role, you will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to successful project outcomes in technological, software, and product development while also contributing to the generation of intellectual property (IP). Each day, you will act as a key technical contributor in Research and Development for perception-related product development, performance improvements, and maintenance of deployed systems. You will apply your expertise to identify, propose, design, and implement innovative solutions in computer vision and 3D perception for autonomous mobile robotics.
- Work model: #LI-hybrid
This role contributes to the 3D Perception and Navigation Team at Sevensense by ABB, part of ABB Robotics, with teams in Spain and Switzerland. You will work closely with Perception, Planning, Control, Test, and Application Engineers to develop, validate, and improve robust perception capabilities for autonomous mobile robots operating in real-world customer environments.
You will be mainly accountable for:
Leading the design, production-grade implementation, and validation of computer vision and 3D perception algorithms for autonomous robots operating in dynamic, real-world environments with a strong focus on robustness, maintainability, and product quality.
Ensuring fast development cycles and reliable releases by designing tools and performing experiments on real robots to evaluate algorithm performance and failure cases in realistic conditions.
Contributing to the technical direction in your area of expertise by proposing new ideas, creating hypotheses, and turning them into validated solutions with clear customer and business value, and contributing to intellectual property generation where relevant.
Supporting and mentoring junior engineers through technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and best practices in software development, experimentation, and documentation.
Qualifications for the Role
5+ years experience and strong expertise in 3D perception or computer vision, ideally in product-oriented or industrial environments, including the development and validation of algorithms in real-world scenarios.
Proven industrial software engineering experience in modern C++, with solid working knowledge of Python. Experience with Rust is a plus.
Experience with perception sensors such as stereo cameras, RGB-D cameras, and/or 2D/3D lidars.
Experience working with ROS, Linux, and Git in a professional development environment, together with a strong understanding of experimentation, validation, and performance evaluation for robotic systems.
Familiarity with deep learning frameworks, MLOps, planning in robotic navigation, embedded Linux platforms such as Jetson, and code optimization for compute limited platforms is a plus.
Ability to solve complex technical problems independently, taking ownership of perception components in a product-driven environment, and collaborating effectively across teams.
You are comfortable communicating in English. A degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is required.
What’s in it for you?
You will join a team of highly talented, motivated, and collaborative professionals located in Sant Quirze del Vallès (Barcelona) and Zurich, Switzerland, working at the forefront of autonomous mobile robotics. As of today we have hundreds of robots deployed across the globe. As part of the 3D Perception and Navigation Team, you will play a key role in building the perception capabilities that allow these robots to operate reliably in dynamic and crowded environments.
The work combines algorithmic depth, hands-on experimentation, and direct product impact, making it both technically challenging and highly rewarding. Your contributions will directly influence the performance, robustness, and scalability of robots operating in the field, while giving you the opportunity to shape technical direction, drive quality improvements, and contribute to the future of intelligent autonomous systems.
