Summary

Headquartered in sunny Los Angeles, GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized AI robotics startup serving the manufacturing industry. We empower shop floor workers with our smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our proprietary GMR-AI™ software is integrated with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.

Our customers in Tijuana and Mexicali are deploying our Physical AI solutions in live production, and they need a Robotics Engineer: Applications on our Activation team who can troubleshoot, optimize, and support these systems from day one. This role owns the work of keeping robotic surface finishing solutions running reliably on the shop floor, investigating complex issues that span software, hardware, sensors, and tooling, and collaborating with our engineering teams to continuously improve product reliability and customer experience. You will work shoulder to shoulder with customers and cross-functional teams to diagnose root causes, implement solutions, and identify opportunities to expand impact within each account. This is high-ownership, fast-paced work for someone who wants to solve problems under real customer pressure.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Before a work cell is deployed, work with the customer to learn the manufacturing process, including observing the current process, taking measurements, and reviewing CAD and machine documentation.

  • Partner with mechanical and robotics engineers to design the work cell layout for a specific manufacturing process, accounting for the robot's reachability and cycle time.

  • Drive design modifications to the robot end of arm tool and part fixtures alongside mechanical engineers, and get parts fabricated, assembled, and tested.

  • Be on site when the work cell is delivered to lead unboxing, setup, and customer training on the use of the system.

  • Set up and test the work cell on the customer manufacturing process, including installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining control components such as proximity sensors, relays, and vacuum ejectors.

  • Triage, investigate, and resolve complex technical issues spanning software, hardware, sensors, and tooling, escalating with clear root cause analysis when remote resolution is not possible.

  • Respond to customer emails and calls on the use of the system, making on site service calls when issues cannot be resolved remotely, and identify new opportunities to expand impact within each account.

  • Collaborate cross functionally with Robotics Software, Hardware, and Product teams on deployments, and deliver structured feedback that improves both the product and the field engineering experience.

  • Leverage AI tools to accelerate troubleshooting, debugging, and the production of technical documentation, raising your own throughput and the team's.

  • Maintain flexible working hours that match the manufacturing production hours of customers, and travel to customer sites as needed, up to 75% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2 or more years of industry experience demonstrating hands-on hardware and software skills, with experience in manufacturing automation or a similar field.

  • Willingness to travel to customer sites in Tijuana and Mexicali, up to 75% of the time, and to work with customers at their sites.

  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.

  • Ability to communicate technical and complex information clearly, both verbally and in writing; documentation is key.

  • Ability to solve technical problems effectively, efficiently, and independently.

  • Demonstrated proficiency working in Linux environments and with remote support tools.

  • Professional working proficiency in Spanish and English, both written and verbal.

  • Willingness to work in a fast paced environment with quickly changing priorities.

  • Must have authorization to work in Mexico and maintain ongoing work authorization from time of hire through the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Familiarity with industrial facilities and equipment.

  • Basic experience with ROS, Python, and/or C++.

  • Experience troubleshooting cyber-physical or hardware systems remotely.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD design (any tool).

  • Demonstrated use of AI tools to automate workflows, analyze data, or accelerate engineering output.
