The Role

Austal USA Advanced Technologies (AT) is a division of Austal USA, a global defense prime contractor and a designer and manufacturer of defense and commercial ships.

Austal USA AT works at the forefront to invent, mature, and implement advanced maritime technologies which enhance operational capacities and improve readiness of our defense systems. Austal USA AT operates a technology hub in Charlottesville VA which works to bring cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to scale and also oversees operation of the U.S. Navy’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM COE) located in Danville, VA. The mission of the AM COE is to operationalize additive manufacturing in the submarine industrial base and provide emergent request support to sustain our Nation’s fleet.

REPORTS TO: Program Manager

SUPERVISES: N/A

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops Robotic programming code to support production equipment.
    • Develops Macro coding used to program the Robotic Profile Cutter.
    • Develop and maintain Rinaswpp parser files.
    • Develops the welding package for the robotic welder.
    • Develops robotic cutting packages for the plasma tables.
  • Provides support troubleshooting issues with robotic equipment, works with equipment vendors to resolve issues.
  • Work with Engineering design team to ensure correct endcut/intermediate cuts are utilized in Ship Constructor, ensure compliance.  Ensures 3-D modeled end cuts are correctly identified to ensure their population into the cutting software.
  • Works with production counterparts to refine macro coding to produce optimal cutting results, factoring consumable usage, processing time.
  • Complies with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.  

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in robotics or software engineering/programming preferred, 4 years of robotic programming experience in lieu of college degree.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of C++, Visual Basic, Javascript. 
  • Must be willing and have the ability to learn new software programs as needed.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Robot Studio a plus.
  • Knowledge of Rinaswpp profile nesting software preferred.
  • Knowledge of Rinasweld robotic welding software preferred.
  • Knowledge of RAPID Programming software preferred.
  • Knowledge of VACAM operating system preferred.
  • Knowledge of Columbus, Sigmanest, CNC G Code cutting programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of SQL, XML, Pascal also preferred but not required.
  • Two (2) years’ experience working with heavy manufacturing equipment.
  • Two (2) years’ AutoCAD experience preferred but not required.
  • Ship Constructor experience preferred but not required.
  • Ship building experience preferred but not required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  

Specific physical requirements include the following:

Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel. Perform prolonged standing. Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis. Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis. Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis. Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis. Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps). Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts. Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead). Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment. Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles. Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment. Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, steeltoes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards. Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures. Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.  Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills. Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down. Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes and/or airborne particles at or below the PEL, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
