Under direction, provides direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, performs technical nursing functions and upholds the standard of practice of a professional nurse in caring for infant through geriatric patients.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care.
- Provides direct patient care.
- Performs nursing functions, applying professional skills.
- Documents and maintains date on patient’s record.
- Maintains a safe environment.
- Applies basic teaching / learning concepts to patient education.
- Provides for life support.
- Acts as a patient advocate.
- Cooperates as a member of the nursing unit, department and overall hospital team.
- Participates in performance improvement.
- Delegates and / or supervises aspects of care to team members and reviews completion.
- Performs related work as required.
- Communicates pertinent data to appropriate parties.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Conducts himself/herself effectively in stressful situations.
- Approaches situations with distressed patients, families, and visitors in a calm, professional manner.
- Collaborates with physicians and nurses to devise individualized care plans for patients.
- Properly assesses and manages patient populations with appropriate intervention.
- Administers intravenous medications and / or parenteral nutrition.
- Administers blood products and evaluates patient response.
Education: Graduate of accredited School of Nursing with either an Associate or Bachelor degree.
License/Certification: La State Board of Nursing License and CPR required. ACLS and PALS preferred.
Additional experience preferred:
- One year of RN experience preferred
- Current knowledge of clinical practice.
- Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
Skills Required
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with an Associate or Bachelor degree
- Louisiana State Board of Nursing RN license
- Current CPR certification
- ACLS certification
- PALS certification
- One year of RN experience
- Current knowledge of clinical practice
- Ability to operate and handle complex equipment
- Clinical competence caring for adolescent through geriatric patients
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, medications, treatments, procedures, counseling, teaching, and medical equipment
