Job Description:

Vitalant is seeking a Registered Nurse to join the Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania as an RN I Research. This is a unique opportunity for an RN who is interested in combining hands-on nursing skills with clinical research while supporting patients with bleeding disorders.

Research experience is preferred but not required. If you have a nursing background, strong organizational skills and an interest in learning clinical research, our team is looking for someone who is eager to grow in this area.

As an RN I Research, you’ll provide research coordination within our comprehensive clinical and research environment. You’ll help carry out clinical research studies from patient recruitment and informed consent through research visits, laboratory testing, documentation and ongoing study coordination.

You’ll work closely with patients, physicians, research staff and multidisciplinary healthcare partners while helping ensure research activities are completed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.

• Coordinate day-to-day activities for clinical research studies and projects
• Schedule patient appointments and coordinate research study visits
• Assist with recruitment of eligible research participants
• Obtain informed consent and maintain confidential research files for enrolled participants
• Complete clinical assessments and brief patient evaluations during research visits
• Coordinate laboratory testing and specimen collection for research projects
• Perform RN-licensed procedures and provide support to the Research Coordinator as needed
• Coordinate research activities with universities, Vitalant, pharmaceutical companies, sponsoring agencies, NIH and governmental agencies
• Coordinate research visits with UPMC research facilities, including GCRC and IDS
• Maintain drug accountability according to study requirements
• Maintain organized and timely storage of blood samples in scientific study freezers
• Complete electronic diaries, case report forms (CRFs) and other required study documentation
• Attend research protocol meetings locally and with industry sponsors
• Assist with coordination and follow-up for multi-center research studies
• Meet regularly with the Center Director to review the progress of active research projects and address study-related issues
• Perform duties in accordance with internal SOPs, research protocols and applicable external regulations
• Maintain confidentiality and provide quality service to patients, research participants and internal and external partners

• Is highly organized and detail-oriented
• Is comfortable working independently while also collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team

• Can manage multiple studies, appointments and deadlines
• Understands the importance of accurate documentation and patient confidentiality
• Is comfortable performing venipuncture and/or phlebotomy
• Is interested in learning clinical research processes and requirements
• Has working knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or Microsoft 365

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing OR associate degree required
• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Pennsylvania required
• One to two years of hands-on nursing experience required
• Venipuncture and/or phlebotomy skills required
• Clinical research experience preferred but not required
• Candidates without previous research experience must have a willingness to learn clinical research

This role offers an RN the opportunity to become part of a specialized multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing care and research for individuals with bleeding disorders. You’ll have the opportunity to build clinical research experience while continuing to work directly with patients and contribute to studies that may help improve future treatment and care.

In addition to a Monday–Friday daytime schedule, this position is onsite at our Oakland location with free onsite parking.

This position requires the ability to perform the physical functions associated with clinical research and patient care, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching and handling research materials and equipment. The position may require lifting, carrying or moving up to 40 pounds.
