Location:
We have offices in New York, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, and Gurgaon. This is a hybrid position out of Gurgaon location and requires you to be in the office multiple days a week.
About the role:
The Rights Management Department is seeking an experienced Rights and Permissions Manager in our Rights Management Department. This role will be responsible for clearing and licensing digital and print rights for publishing and verifying ownership of internal and 3rd party content. In this role you will be working closely with other departments and stakeholders across the company including our licensing, acquisitions, and editorial departments. This role reports to the Sr. Director, Rights Management.
About you:
We are looking for an experienced director with extensive experience working with digital rights for text, images, and audio-visual works. You can manage a team spread across multiple offices and time-zones. The ideal candidate has deep ties to and expert knowledge of the publishing industry. You are able to clear and negotiate rights from third parties and have a strong knowledge of IP law. You must be able to broker new relationships and establish/maintain relationships with content providers under ever changing market conditions.
Your day-day: (aka Responsibilities)
- Form new relationships and maintain ongoing deals with global publishers, media companies, and other rights holders
- Negotiator for licensed content that appears in TMB publications
- Contract with writers, artists and other content professionals to assign projects
- Provide training and ongoing guidance to all teams who have touchpoints with content to ensure compliance with 3rd party rights agreements and best practices around content usage
- Ensure production files for internal publications are vetted for rights issues prior to publication
- Oversee the drafting, negotiation and execution of various licenses per year
- Collaborate closely with PubTech to optimize TMB’s Content Management System for rights accuracy; have a command of publishing technologies with a preference for experience in Woodwing Software;
- Collect, track and review accuracy of various deliverables including permission agreements, rights, credits and clearance logs
- Create, maintain and update internal and external facing documents, trackers and grids across various programs including Excel, Word, Jira
- Provide support to ensure international partners have access to rights cleared content for use
- Review permissions quotes as needed to ensure we obtain the highest license fee possible
You have: (aka Qualifications)
- 4-7 years' experience working with intellectual property rights, especially copyright and trademark issues
- 3+ years of prior management experience
- Experience with dealing with rights and clearance issues across print and digital platforms, including chain-of-title
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence; ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with a wide variety of people across diverse cultures
- Confident in providing direction and guidance in areas of intellectual property management and ensure compliance with internal Rights and Clearance procedures and standards
- Keen facility for managing contractual relationships and conducting business negotiations
- Demonstrable experience supervising and managing others including staff development, mentoring, coaching and performance reviews
- Superior organizational and record management skills including experience using MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel and Word) and various computer applications to track and organize workflows, including Jira
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to exercise appropriate judgment in executing tasks with minimal supervision, including the ability to be persistent and think outside-the-box to find solutions when needed
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile growth environment where you will get your hands into the details
