Who we are

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds.

Our heritage of looking after the pension needs of the rail industry and its employees gives us our name and our unique outlook on how we serve our members. Railpen takes a holistic view, focusing on how we serve members today and how we can positively impact the communities and the world they will retire into.

Our values of integrity, community and alignment are the guiding principles that influence our behaviour. They help us make decisions and shape our relationships with others. They’re what we stand for. You will actively demonstrate our values, helping to create a safe environment, to place the needs of the community above oneself and, through a culture of ‘fair challenge’, align to the best interests of our members.

The Role

As the Responsible AI Lead, you will act as Railpen’s subject matter expert for the responsible adoption and use of artificial intelligence across the organisation. You will play a pivotal role in enabling innovation while ensuring that AI technologies are deployed in a controlled, transparent and risk-aware manner.

You will establish and embed a robust framework for AI governance, risk management and assurance, ensuring that all AI-related activity aligns with Railpen’s existing technology security and governance standards. Working closely with colleagues across technology, risk and the wider business, you will ensure that AI risks are identified, assessed and managed proportionately, in line with our defined risk appetite.

The role will be central to integrating AI risk management into Railpen’s broader governance landscape, supporting clear decision-making and promoting confidence in the use of emerging technologies. You will also provide oversight and guidance to project teams, ensuring that responsible AI principles are applied consistently throughout the lifecycle of AI initiatives.

In doing so, you will directly support Railpen’s operational strategy by focusing on delivering value through safe and effective AI use, helping the organisation remain fit for the future, enabling our people to adopt new technologies responsibly, and striving for simplicity through clear and practical governance approaches.

The Person

The successful candidate will act as a visible role model for Responsible AI and Technology, Security & Governance, demonstrating behaviours that foster a positive, open and collaborative culture aligned to Railpen’s values. You will bring the confidence and credibility to lead conversations on Responsible AI, building strong and trusted relationships with stakeholders across the organisation.

With a proactive and pragmatic mindset, you will support the business through AI governance, audit and assurance activities, providing clear direction through structured planning, effective communication and proportionate, risk-based decision making. You will be comfortable navigating complexity, balancing innovation with control, and ensuring that AI is adopted safely and responsibly.

You will have a continuous improvement mindset, actively seeking and providing constructive feedback to enhance both your own effectiveness and Railpen’s approach to Responsible AI governance and risk management.
