Job Description

  

Summary

Initiates the design, development, execution and implementation of scientific research projects.  Investigates the feasibility of applying scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions and products.  Plans and executes laboratory research.  Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences.  May participate in development of patent applications.  May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts, and all other duties as assigned. Works under general supervision. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action; a certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participates in decision making regarding research priorities of company or department, and provides information on feasibility of prospective projects.

  • Develops research plan, designs experiments, outlines research procedures to be followed, and identifies and/or provides training to subordinate personnel to carry out research.

  • Determines design approaches and parameters.

  • Plans schedule of research according to organization’s timetable, and establishes daily or weekly routines necessary to meet project timetable.

  • Participates in securing funding as necessary through governmental grants, foundations, institutes, and/or corporate sponsors.

  • Conducts research using laboratory equipment, computer resources, and institutional libraries.

  • Analyzes equipment to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests, and evaluates results. 

  • Selects components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability. 

  • Provides expertise in field of research to other department members.

  • Performs and reports interim analysis of accumulated data to provide status of project or research.

  • Prepares reports and papers of completed projects for publication in technical journals, presentation to regulatory agencies or at conferences, or use in further research activities.

  • Helps establish an effective design flow organization.

  • Provides engineering support to product lines including manufacturing technical support, sales product application, customer service support, and marketing proposal support.

  • Assists in business development using technical proposals with compliance matrices.

  • Researches technology advances in devices and techniques.

  • Supports bid and proposal activities as needed.

  • Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals and deadlines.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university in a related field and 2-5 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
