About the Opportunity

The Research Development Manager is a member of the Office of Research Strategy and Development (ORSD). The purpose of ORSD is to catalyze creative scholarship by empowering individuals and teams to lead strategic research endeavors with global impact. The group works with faculty, the Vice President for Research and other Brown leaders to provide research leadership, build research capacity and enable federal funding for research at Brown. Our group offers strategic planning and team support for collaborative research proposals; identifies and disseminates federal funding opportunities, consults with individual faculty on their proposal development strategies, manages competitive and/or limited submission processes; develops and maintains relationships with mission-driven federal funding agencies; and helps connect and leverage Brown’s research investments across the university to help coordinate and optimize new federally funded research.

The team provides strategic counsel to the Vice President of Research and senior leadership on the research enterprise at Brown.

Reporting to the Senior Director of the Office of Research Strategy and Development, the Manager will support the research goals of faculty in the physical sciences and the School of Engineering at Brown University. The Manager will:

FACULTY RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT: establish collaborative relationships with faculty who are eligible to submit federal funding proposals; reach out to new faculty to provide guidance on a career in research; support current individual faculty proposals; learn about faculty research agendas in assigned portfolio, and identify potential funding targets.

PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT: provide research development support for proposals in assigned areas; assist in the writing of the non-technical components of proposals; develop broader impacts and outreach components for proposals by liaising with other offices across campus;

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: oversee dissemination of funding opportunities to Brown faculty; and create and document office processes to maximize efficiency and increase the reach of the office. INSTITUTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Support the Senior Director in their efforts in building new and strengthening ongoing relationships with mission driven funding agencies such as DoD and DoE, and their affiliate laboratories.

EDUCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS: assist in the creation of workshops and other support for faculty research and teaming capabilities; such as workshops focused on the technical skills of proposal development (i.e. grant writing, strategies for broader impacts or advancing inclusive excellence in research), team development (i.e. networking events, direct introductions across campus or to other institutions) and brainstorming sessions regarding scientific research strategies.

    Qualifications: 

    • Graduate degree; STEM field preferred

    • At least 3+ years of related experience in a university or research institute or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Job Competencies:

    • Microsoft and Google suite tools; competent with spreadsheets and databases

    • Ability to work independently, coordinating and prioritizing multiple projects as well as part of a team

    • Strong organizational and customer service skills

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make effective presentations

    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

    • Ability to work collaboratively with a team

    • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
