About the opportunity

As the Research Computing AI Group Lead, you will play a critical leadership and technical role within the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH), supporting the University of Sydney’s advanced research computing capabilities. This position combines people leadership with hands-on technical expertise, leading a small team while driving the operational ownership, strategic development, and delivery of AI and GPU compute platforms.

You will contribute to major initiatives such as the Sydney Research Cloud and emerging national collaborations, including the FUSION AI Factory. Working closely with academic, research, and technology stakeholders, you will enable cutting-edge research outcomes across disciplines by delivering scalable, high-performance computing infrastructure and expert support.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • lead, mentor and manage a team of technical specialists delivering research computing services

  • oversee AI and GPU computing platforms, including Kubernetes-based infrastructure and workload schedulers

  • drive platform operations including performance monitoring, access management, and infrastructure optimisation

  • collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align research computing strategy and delivery

  • contribute to University-wide AI and research infrastructure strategy and roadmap development

  • manage delivery of research computing solutions, training, and project support for researchers

  • support development and deployment of AI, data science, and research software solutions

  • develop and enforce policies, documentation, and operational processes for platform use

  • identify emerging research and AI infrastructure needs and translate them into platform improvements

About you

  • postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience

  • demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing technical teams

  • strong expertise in Kubernetes, cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure), and GPU computing environments

  • deep understanding of AI technologies, including machine learning and large language models

  • experience with containerisation tools (e.g. Docker, Singularity) and research computing workflows

  • proven capability in data science, software engineering, and complex data analysis

  • strong project management skills with experience delivering complex technical initiatives

  • experience working in Linux environments with scripting and automation

  • knowledge of identity and access management principles and secure platform operations

  • ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders and translate technical concepts
