JOB PURPOSE:

The Research Associate supports the implementation and day-to-day operations of the distress screening program for cancer outpatients at Howard University Hospital (HUH). The incumbent assists with patient identification, psychosocial distress screening activities, data management, regulatory compliance, and research-related activities to ensure the effective delivery and evaluation of the program.

SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The Research Associate works under the direction of the Principal Investigator and designated study team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare and research professionals.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

The Research Associate plays a key role in supporting research and clinical activities related to psychosocial distress screening among HUH cancer outpatients. Responsibilities include assisting with patient screening, maintaining accurate documentation, coordinating study-related activities, ensuring data quality and consistency, supporting regulatory compliance efforts, and contributing to scholarly dissemination activities. The position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interact professionally with patients and healthcare providers while maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Coordinate and support an efficient process for identifying Howard University Hospital cancer outpatients eligible for distress screening.
  • Assist study team members in conducting psychosocial distress screenings for HUH cancer outpatients.
  • Maintain comprehensive, timely, and accurate documentation of distress screening assessments and upload results into designated online distress screening software.
  • Support the provision of referrals and linkages to community resources for cancer outpatients based on identified psychosocial needs.
  • Assist with the maintenance and organization of regulatory and study-related documents.
  • Support manuscript development, preparation, and other scholarly dissemination activities.
  • Participate in weekly meetings with study team members to review project progress and priorities.
  • Coordinate study-related activities and monitor data quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, regulatory, and ethical requirements governing research activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or a related field preferred. Experience and Skills. Experience working in a healthcare, research, behavioral health, or related setting preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel, and internet-based applications. Experience with electronic data collection systems, databases, or research software preferred. Ability to maintain accurate records and manage multiple projects simultaneously Training and Professional Development. Must complete and maintain all required institutional training, including annual and periodic Compliance Program training. Must complete and maintain Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy and Security training. Participates in ongoing professional development and training activities as required.

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

$50,000-$57,700
