About the Role:

Flinders University is seeking a motivated Research Associate to join an ARC-funded research team investigating water quality, groundwater systems and ecosystem sustainability in coastal and freshwater environments across Australia. You will investigate surface water-groundwater interactions, channel-network modelling, nutrient discharge, freshwater-saltwater dynamics and water management practices using a combination of numerical modelling, field-based research, data analysis and physical experimentation.

You will contribute to:

  • Developing and applying numerical models to investigate groundwater and surface water systems, including mixed-density groundwater processes
  • Conducting fieldwork, analysing field data and contributing to physical experimentation, including sand tank experiments
  • Investigating the impacts of climate, land use, river regulation and groundwater extraction on groundwater systems
  • Collaborating with researchers and project partners across disciplines and institutions
  • Preparing scientific reports, publications and presentations and communicating research findings to academic and project audiences

The role may involve travel to field sites and interstate travel to meet with project partners. This position is open to domestic and international candidates.

About You
You are an emerging researcher with expertise in hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources engineering or a related discipline. You bring strong numerical and quantitative skills, with the ability to apply mathematical modelling, scientific programming and data analysis to complex water systems. You are curious, collaborative and able to apply scientific approaches to complex water management and environmental challenges.

You will bring:

  • A PhD in hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources engineering or a related field, or be near completion of a PhD
  • Demonstrated expertise in physics-based modelling of surface water and/or groundwater systems
  • Knowledge of surface water-groundwater interactions and surface-subsurface hydrological processes
  • Strong scientific programming and numerical modelling skills, including proficiency in Python or a similar programming language
  • Experience with field-based research, data analysis and/or physical experimentation relevant to hydrological or hydrogeological systems
