The Role

Job Description:

The research assistant will contribute to experimental work in a reproductive toxicology laboratory. Routine job functions will include assisting with rodent study work, benchwork including RNA isolation, real-time PCR, sequencing library preparation, histology, and immunohistochemistry, and laboratory maintenance tasks.

The research in Dr. Daniel Spade’s lab in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine focuses on mechanisms of male reproductive toxicity. The Spade lab seeks to understand the impacts of environmental chemicals and pharmaceuticals male reproductive health. We are currently studying (1) the mechanisms and later life effects of phthalate toxicity to fetal testis development, and (2) the role of RNA in spermatozoa in male fertility and the use of spermatozoa RNAs as biomarkers of fertility and male reproductive toxicity.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from hire, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Education and Experience

  • Required (Grade 7) Bachelor’s Degree with prior related experience or extensive coursework

  • Required: (Grade 8) Bachelor's Degree with prior related laboratory research experience and 1-2 years experience.

  • And/or the equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Statistics and data analysis experience is a plus

  • Relevant course work related to toxicology or environmental health is highly desired

  • Ability to perform the technical aspects of laboratory research, including the accurate use of pipets, balances, microscopes, and other instruments

  • Commitment to maintaining clean and organized workspaces

  • Ability to follow detailed instructions

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills, ability to implement solutions

  • Excellent organizational, record keeping, task prioritization and report preparation skills

  • Ability to support the lab group and to interact with a diverse range of individuals

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a diverse group of people, with vastly different skills and training

  • Proficiency with computers and essential software programs (e.g. MS Office, Google Suite, etc.)

  • Familiarity and proficiency with or ability to learn to use statistical analysis software

  • Ability to communicate clearly about scientific data, including presenting data in lab meetings

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
