Position: Research Assistant, 3D Imaging and Science Communication

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Department: Negaunee Integrative Research Center

Our Mission: Since the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, our organization has aimed to connect people to the natural environment and human history.

This position will support a team developing a Tiny Animal Scavenger Hunt for visitors in several Field Museum galleries, including Mammals, What Is an Animal?, Birds, and Africa. The activity will encourage visitors to discover and learn about small animals that can be easily overlooked within exhibits and dioramas.

Through interactive 3D models and interpretive content, the project will highlight how the anatomy and physical characteristics of small animals provide insight into evolutionary adaptations and life at a small scale.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Use provided CT Scans from biological specimens to create and/or prepare interactive 3D models for visitor access through QR codes.

  • Develop clear, engaging interpretive text for each model that explains characteristics related to the animal’s small size.

  • Create a visitor-friendly map showing where to find each 3D model QR code across the galleries, to be posted online for visitor access.

  • Collaborate with team members and exhibit personnel to plan the deployment of the Tiny Animal Scavenger Hunt.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student; coursework or training in biology and/or visual science communication is preferred.

  • Experience with 3D imaging and/or modeling using Blender or similar software.

  • Foundational knowledge of vertebrate skeletal and skull anatomy.

  • Ability to work independently and meet established project timelines.

  • Natural history illustration experience preferred.

Supervision Received:

Work Hours and Shift:

This position requires approximately 5 hours per week, with at least one day per week working on-site at FMNH during the school year.
