Sentara is hiring for a Research Analytics Intern!This position is fully remote!
OverviewThe Intern position serves as an educational development opportunity within the Research Analytics team at a large, integrated healthcare system. Under the guidance of experienced analytics and research professionals, the intern will contribute to applied research projects spanning the full research analytics lifecycle, including study design, regulatory compliance (IRB), electronic health record (EHR) data extraction, statistical analysis, and dissemination through presentations and publication.
Assists in completion of various projects and administrative duties while developing skills related to the assigned department and healthcare industry. Coordinates and assists with projects based on operational needs and/or Intern's area of interest. Communicates ongoing progress related to currently assigned tasks. This role is designed for individuals interested in advancing both their technical and applied research skillsets while supporting multidisciplinary clinical and academic research initiatives across physician, nursing, and academic partner collaborations (e.g., EVMS and ODU).
Job DescriptionDuties will vary depending on the department, including:
- Assists with day-to-day operations.
- Supports colleagues with project tasks and deliverables.
- Research Design & Planning: Assists in development of study design, analytic plans, and research protocols in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and academic investigators.
- Regulatory & IRB Support: Supports preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions, including data management plans, analytic descriptions, and compliance with human subject's protections.
- Helps with administrative duties, such as scheduling meetings or preparing reports.
- Data Extraction & Management: Works with research analysts to extract, transform, and prepare electronic health record (EHR) data (Epic) and other clinical datasets for analysis, ensuring data quality and reproducibility.
- Statistical Analysis & Interpretation: Assists in performing basic descriptive and inferential statistical analyses under supervision, contributing to interpretation of findings aligned with study objectives.
- Technical Skill Development: Applies and advances technical capabilities in:
- SQL for querying structured healthcare datasets
- Databricks for data processing and analytics workflows
- Epic data structures and reporting environments
- Reporting & Dissemination: Prepares tables, figures, and analytic summaries for research reports, presentations, and manuscripts, ensuring alignment with publication standards.
- Project Coordination & Communication: Communicates progress on assigned tasks, supports coordination of research activities, and collaborates effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Operational & Administrative Support: Assists with scheduling, documentation, and organization of research deliverables to support efficient project execution.
- Conducts research and analysis on topics relevant to the department.
- Contributes to the development and execution of projects.
- Prepares and organizes data for presentations and reports.
- Participates in team meetings and brainstorming sessions.
- High School Grad or Equivalent (Required)
- Must be currently pursuing and/or enrolled in a college or university at an undergraduate or graduate level or an active military service member seeking a SkillBridge internship.
- No specific certification or licensure requirements
- Basic knowledge of SQL
- Basic knowledge of statistics
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
