Summary:
The La Jolla Light, a weekly Union-Tribune Community Press publication, has an opening for a full-time reporter.
We are looking for a journalist who will immerse themselves in coverage of community news, including government-related bodies, schools, sports, businesses, local personalities, entertainment, real estate, health and science.
What you will do:
- Provide impactful stories and news reports for prominent display in print and on digital platforms
- Provide weekly meeting coverage in La Jolla (often late afternoon or early evening meetings)
- Build a network of sources
- Versatility is a must, as stories will cover a variety of topics
- Write on deadline in a fast-paced environment; speed and accuracy are critical. Although the Light publishes weekly in print, it publishes daily online. Candidates must have the ability to produce daily copy as necessary
- Pitch story ideas on a regular basis
- Take publishable photographs (good cellphone photos are fine)
- Maintain communication with a supervising editor
- Understand and use company-provided hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasks
- Contribute to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration
- Provide occasional coverage of weekend and holiday events
What you will bring:
- Academic degree or equivalent experience in journalism
- Command of various journalistic writing forms with solid news judgment and fluency in style
- Ability to work cooperatively and adaptively in a team setting
- Proven ability to juggle tasks in a deadline-driven environment
- Commitment to the fundamentals of journalism: Fairness, accuracy, accessibility
- Strong interpersonal, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills and an ability to work with people at all levels of the organization
- The skill to mine human sources, documents and data
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required
The hourly wage is $21.63. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
