Reporter

The Star Democrat (Easton, Maryland) is looking for a general assignment reporter. You will work with editors and reporters who are committed to producing a great newspaper and championing good writing that helps our readers better understand the complex world in which we live.

The position is a critical part of the Star Democrat newsroom. We want someone who can go beyond meetings to find stories the community needs to know. This is not a traditional 9-to-5 position. The successful candidate must be flexible and available during assigned production, posting and deadline windows, which may include early mornings, evenings or weekends. Hours will vary based on publication schedules, staffing needs and production volume but will not exceed 40 hours per week.

The ideal reporter has experience in newsrooms and has a knack for creative stories – both news and features. You’ll take your own photos and videos for stories. Experience with a content management system is a plus, but not a requirement.

The Star Democrat has a close-knit newsroom. The reporters and editors are supportive, and we want to see each other succeed. We work hard, but we are serious about maintaining a good balance between work and life.

The newspaper is produced six days a week – four days in print and two days as e-editions. Stories often appear online before they run in print. The Star Democrat is located in Easton, Maryland, on the beautiful Eastern Shore. The newspaper covers stories in a five-county region.

Easton is about an hour from Baltimore and 90 minutes from Washington, D.C. Amenities include close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and its many water sports and activities. There is a vibrant arts and entertainment scene. If you love good food, the hundreds of wonderful restaurants on the Eastern Shore are a big draw.

Pay: $20.51 - $23.08 per hour depending on experience.
